Desperado
Glenn Frey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
You've been out riding fences, for so long now
Oh you're a hard one but I know you got your reasons
These things that are pleasing you can hurt you somehow

Don't you draw the queen of diamonds boy, she'll beat you if she's able
You know the queen of hearts is always your best bet
Now it seems to me some fine things have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones that you can't get
Desperado, oh, you ain't getting no younger

Your pain and your hunger they're driving you home
And freedom, oh freedom, well, that's just some people talking
Your prison is walking through this world all alone

Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won't snow, and the sun won't shine
It's hard to tell the night time, from the day
You're losing all your highs and lows
Ain't it funny how the feeling goes away

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses
Come down from your fences and open the gate?
It may be raining, oh raining but there's a rainbow above you

You better let somebody love you, let somebody love you
You better let somebody love you before it's too late

Overall Meaning

The song Desperado by Glenn Frey is a plea to a wild, reckless and independent cowboy, who has been living life on the edge, to return to the fold and to give up the solitary life. The song is an emotional plea to the Desperado to stop hiding behind his tough exterior and allow himself to feel emotions and be loved. The lyrics are full of metaphors that describe the desperado's life; he has been riding fences for too long, he is playing with fire, and only wants what he can't have. The song's chorus aims to persuade the cowboy to open up his heart and notice that the world is not such a terrible place, and to allow somebody to care for him.

Furthermore, the song's final verse indicates that the Desperado is getting older, and the harshness of the world is starting to take its toll. He is now losing his energetic nature, and the highs and lows of his life are starting to evaporate. The song finishes with a plea for him to take action now, to leave behind his solitary life, to open the gate, and to allow himself to be loved.
