Reminiscing
Glenn Shorrock Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Friday night it was late, I was walking you home
We got down to the gate, I was dreaming of the night
Would it turn out right?
How to tell you girl, I want to build my world around you
Wanna tell you that it's true
I wanna make you understand I'm talking about a lifetime plan

Well that's the way it began, we were hand-in-hand
Glen Miller's band was better than before
We yelled and screamed for more
And those Porter's tunes made us dance across the room
It ended all too soon
On the way back home I promised you'd never be alone

Hurry, don't be late
I can't hardly wait
I said to myself when we're old
We'll go dancing in the dark, walking through the park
And reminiscing

Friday night it was late, I was walking you home
We got down to the gate, I was dreaming of the night
Would it turn out right?
Now as the years roll on, each time we hear our favorite song
The memories come along
Older times we're missing, spending the hours reminiscing

Hurry, don't be late
I can't hardly wait
I said to myself when we're old

We'll go dancing in the dark, walking through the park
And reminiscing

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Glenn Shorrock & Brian Cadd's song "Reminiscing" evoke a sense of nostalgia and romantic longing for a past love. The singer recounts a Friday night walking his sweetheart home, listening to Glenn Miller's band and dancing to Porter's tunes. He wishes to build his world around her and promises she'll never be alone. As the years go by, they reminisce about those precious moments spent together.

The song captures the bittersweet emotion of remembering the past and the joy it brings while also acknowledging the pain of not being able to relive those times. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a simpler time - of listening to music on the radio, dancing in the dark, and walking through the park with a loved one. "Reminiscing" is not just a love song but a deeply relatable anthem for anyone who has fond memories of the past.

My wife and I just celebrated our 40th anniversary.

"Now as the years roll on
Each time we hear our favorite song
The memories come along
Older times we're missing
Spending the hours reminiscing"

And, indeed Reminiscing is among our favorite songs. It was included in the music playlist for our wedding reception.

As I am getting older this song gets closer and closer to my heart. I loved it when I was 22 and love it even more now at 60

Omg. I feel the same way at 57. It’s so bittersweet. Can you ever use this song with a new love? Or is it just meant to stay in the past and in our hearts?

I used to play this song for my mom on Sunday mornings after breakfast, starting around 2010 when she was 74 yrs old. The song made me think of her and my dad's courtship days in the early 1950's at Michigan State; he was a big Glen Miller fan and they'd go dancing on weekends at Wampler's Lake, where the big bands used to come play on their Midwest tours. She loved this song b/c it reminded her of him, who passed away after 52yrs of marriage in 2006., She died 1 day shy of her 87th b-day on Feb. 7, 2021. Miss ya, mom.
