Long Distance
Go Sailor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes I come home to no one
But it's much better than having no fun with you
You said that you'd start calling
But when does that start 'cause I'm still waiting

But I won't wish your plane down
Just this time, next time you won't be so lucky
I have no sympathy left for you
Please just pay me what you owe me

Monday I got a postcard from you
But I don't think I know what you hoped to achieve
With all the spaces you left in between
I'm sad that none of it means anything

But I won't wish your plane down
Just this time, next time you won't be so lucky
I have no sympathy left for you
Please just pay me what you owe me

Long distance calling
Big stars are falling
Long distance bother
Too late to call back now

I won't wish your plane down
Just this time, next time you won't be so lucky

I have no sympathy left for you
Please just pay me what you owe me

Overall Meaning

The song 'Long Distance' by Go Sailor is about the struggle of maintaining a long-distance relationship. The lyrics describe the feelings of disappointment, loneliness, and frustration that arise from being physically separated from a loved one. The singer says that even though they come home to an empty house, it's still better than having no fun with their partner. They are waiting for their partner to start calling but have not received any call yet. The singer states that they won't wish bad things to happen to their partner just because they are missing them, but warns them that next time they won't be so lucky.

The singer adds that they have no sympathy left for their partner and asks them to pay them what they owe. The second verse describes the postcard that the singer received from their partner. However, the singer does not understand the purpose of the postcard as the message does not seem to mean anything to them. The chorus repeats that the singer won't wish for their partner's plane to crash, but they want their partner to be aware that they won't always be lucky. The term 'Long-distance calling' refers to the phone calls between the partners whilst the term 'Big Stars are falling' may refer to the night sky being clear enough to see meteor showers.
