Go West quickly had a publishing deal and possessed a portastudio, but lacked a band or recording company. Peter and Richard decided, with support from John Glover, their manager, to find a musical producer, and record just two of their songs. The tracks We Close Our Eyes and Call Me found Go West developing a record deal with Chrysalis Records. The songwriting duo specialised in radio friendly, white soul sounds.
The band's debut single, We Close Our Eyes, was released in 1985 and managed to achieve the number 5 position on the UK Singles charts, #5 on the US Dance Club Play chart and also managed to reach #41 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. The video for the song became an early favorite on MTV. This helped them to be voted the "Best Newcomers" at the 1986, BRIT Awards.
The duo's self-titled album also featured 2 more Hot 100 entries; "Call Me" (1984 - #54) and "Eye To Eye" (1985 - #73). The album also featured "Don't Look Down", which would serve as the prequel to what would be the band's first Top 40 hit in the US. The album hit #8 in the UK Album charts and #60 on Billboard 200 Album chart.
In 1987, they released their follow-up, "Dancing On The Couch", which peaked at #19 on UK Album chart but only got as high as #172 in the US. Ironically, that album yielded Go West with their first US Top 40 hit, "Don't Look Down - The Sequel", squeaking into the Top 40 peaking at #39. That song was a continuation to "Don't Look Down" from their debut album. However, "Don't Look Down - The Sequel" was excluded from the UK versions of the CD, which instead included the track, "Let's Build A Boat", which coincidentally became the B-Side of the US release of "Don't Look Down - The Sequel".
Later in 1990, Go West scored a top 10 US hit with the song King of Wishful Thinking from the movie Pretty Woman. An instrumental version of the song's chorus is also alleged to be heard in the production logo for Gracie Films (seen at the end of The Simpsons).

Tracks Of My Tears
Go West Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Because I tell a joke or two
Although I might be laughing loud and hearty
Deep inside I'm blue
So take a good look at my face
You'll see my smile looks out of place
If you look closer, it's easy to trace
I need you, need you
Since you left me if you see me with another girl
Seeming like I'm having fun
Although she may be cute
She's just a substitute
Because you're the permanent one
So take a good look at my face
You'll see my smile looks out of place
If you look closer, it's easy to trace
The tracks of my tears
I need you, need you
Outside I'm masquerading
Inside my hope is fading
Just a clown oh yeah
Since you put me down
My smile is my make up
I wear since my break up with you
So take a good look at my face
You'll see my smile looks out of place
If you look closer, it's easy to trace
The tracks of my tears
In Go West's song Tracks Of My Tears, the lyrics describe a person who is deemed the life of the party due to their ability to tell jokes and make people laugh. However, beneath the surface, this person is struggling with sadness and depression. The lyrics suggest that the person is trying to put on a brave face and hide their pain from others, even from those closest to them. The line "although I might be laughing loud and hearty, deep inside I'm blue" perfectly captures the struggle of putting on a smile and pretending to be happy when one is actually feeling very unhappy.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "the tracks of my tears," which refers to the visible evidence of the person's pain. The lyrics claim that if one looks closely at the person's face, they will see that their smile looks out of place and that there are traces of tears. The song suggests that the person's efforts to hide their pain are unsuccessful and that they are struggling to move on from a past relationship. The lyrics also suggest that the happiness the person experiences with others is a mere facade, and that they are always thinking about their lost love.
Overall, the song is a powerful exploration of the complex emotions behind public appearances. Although people may seem cheerful and content on the outside, there may be hidden pain and suffering that they are trying to conceal. This song reminds us that it is important to look beyond appearances and try to understand the deeper emotions that people may be experiencing.

Although I might be laughing loud and hearty
Even though I may seem to be having a great time
Deep inside I'm blue
I am actually feeling sad
So take a good look at my face
If you observe me closely
You'll see my smile looks out of place
You will notice that my smile doesn't fit my mood
If you look closer, it's easy to trace
On closer inspection, it is clear to see

Since you left me if you see me with another girl
When you left me and if you see me with someone else
Seeming like I'm having fun
Appearing as if I am enjoying myself
Although she may be cute
Even if she is attractive
She's just a substitute
She is only a temporary replacement for you
Because you're the permanent one
You are the one I truly want to be with
Outside I'm masquerading
In public, I am pretending
Inside my hope is fading
But internally, I am losing hope
Just a clown oh yeah
I have become a joke to myself
Since you put me down
Ever since you rejected me
My smile is my make up
My smile is like a mask that covers up my true feelings
I wear since my break up with you
That I wear since we broke up
