Grant was born as Myrtle Audrey Arinsberg in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the eldest of six children of Russian Jewish parents, Rose (née Jacobson) and Alexander Arinsberg. At the age of 12, she moved to Los Angeles, where she attended Venice High School. In California, she won a teenage singing contest and appeared on television talent shows.

She worked as a car salesperson in the early 1950s.In 1952 she began to record, using first the name "Audrey Brown" and later "Audrey Grant." She was given the name "Gogi" by Dave Kapp, the head of Artists and Repertory at RCA Victor, who liked to patronize a restaurant called "Gogi's LaRue." (Another source says that Grant asked Kapp, "What is a Gogi?" She continued, "His answer was, 'Darned if I know, I dreamed it last night.'")

In 1955 Grant signed with a small record company, Era Records, and had her first top ten hit with "Suddenly There's a Valley." The next year, she had an even bigger hit, reaching number 1 on Billboard 's Top 100 chart with "The Wayward Wind" and holding there for six weeks. The song sold over one million copies in the United States alone, and peaked at No. 9 in the UK Singles Chart. She was voted the most popular female vocalist by Billboard magazine. This single returned to the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961.

In 1957, she supplied the vocals for Ann Blyth's portrayal of Helen Morgan in the biographical film, The Helen Morgan Story. The soundtrack occasioned her return to RCA Victor (the soundtrack album climbed to No. 25 in the Billboard album chart), where she had a minor hit the following year with "Strange Are the Ways of Love." Moreover, she was signed to star in The Big Beat in the spring of 1957. The film, which featured musical performances by the Cal Tjader Quintet, George Shearing, and the Del Vikings, was produced and directed by William Cowan and released in February 1958.

In 1958, Grant was one of the three solo singers featured in the first stereo LP of the classic musical Show Boat. The other solo singers were Howard Keel, who had appeared in the 1951 film version of the show, and Anne Jeffreys.

Although she made albums and appeared on television into the 1960s, her popularity declined and she initially retired from singing in 1967 after a final US chart single, "The Sea" (top 20 on Billboard's Easy Listening chart). An album of hers was released in UK some 20 years later. Grant survived cancer surgery and was in remission. In 2004, aged 80, she made an appearance on the PBS 1950s pop music special Magic Moments and sang "The Wayward Wind."

Grant headlined with The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies in Palm Springs, California. One of her more notable appearances of her later years was with the Follies on December 31, 2006. She was still performing as late as 2013, at the age of 89.

In 1959, Grant married attorney Robert Rifkind. The couple had two children.

Grant died on March 10, 2016, aged 91. Her death was announced by her son, Joshua Beckett. She also had a daughter, Jeri Brown.

I first heard this song in 1956 in Memphis, TN. I was in the Marines. Just flunked Marine Pilot training because of a bad ear. They offered me Aviation Electronics School at Memphis. I was in a bad way. Wanted to be a Pilot since I was 5 yrs old. This song gave me the Ok to keep on keeping on. Thank you Gogi Grant for saving my life.

During the summer of 1956 we were traveling from Virginia to Tennessee I was 6. It was during the six week period the song was number one. I remember every radio station we picked up during the trip to and from Tennessee played this song. I play and sing this song in coffe houses and open jams near where I live and it is always very well received.

I first heard this song on a 78 rpm in 1960 and fell in love with it. It came out when I was born in 1955. I still have that 78 amongst many others. It's wonderful to hear this 66 year old song just as clear as the day it was recorded. Sweet.👍

The arrangement of this version adds so much to it, the way the strings, chorus and French horn combine perfectly to make that mysterious and unique sound. Whoever it was who worked with Ms. Grant to make this arrangement deserves special credit. I think the arrangement inspired her singing as well. Awesome song.

@@dancasey1370 The Youtube showing her doing the song when she was 80 on the PBS program is interesting in many ways, but one is that they pretty much re-created the arrangement for her...French horn and all....and it's fun to watch. The only thing missing is that great string section part with the western harmony interval between the verses (at 1:34 in this version). They changed it to wind instruments Can you imagine singing with such a wonderful arrangement? Easy to understand why her singing was so inspired. Who could not be moved by what was going on around her? Great that she still had the feeling for the song so many years later and could still do it! Thanks so much for posting the original with the neat pictures that fit so well.

I was 11 years old when this song came out and I was completely fascinated by it. Back in those days just about every restaurant and cafe had a jukebox and I would always pester my dad for money so I could play this song. It's a good thing he liked it too.

She was from Philly. I am also from Philly, and I was born in 1956, the year this was a hit. Interestingly I listened to MOR radio my entire childhood and never heard the song played until perhaps the 1990s when listening to nostalgia stations. I remember this song. I was just four years old. On vacation driving through the Midwest-Mid South, on a car trip with my parents. Windows rolled down, watching the hillside roll by. NO seat belts (piffft). Are you kidding? Sometimes, if we didn’t block the old man’s rear view, I would ride on that rear seat deck for miles. And this playing on the AM radio. Classic. I remember it like it was yesterday. Mom made egg sandwiches. My little brother was pinching me, trying to get me to take the bait. America just kicked everybody’s @s$. All was well in the world.

We were driving down to see my dad’s brother. It was late May; Memorial Weekend, and I look out the window and - I swear to God - I see a very small funnel cloud, with the base/tip trying its d@mndest to touch the ground. Then it would bounce back up to the clouds, then try again. As a four year old, I kept experiencing the terror of recently watching the Wizard of Oz Easter weekend. I hid under my bed after the tornado scene. Now I see this for real and almost $h!+ myself. I repeatedly tapped my mother on the arm. ‘’Mom! Mom!’’ But she just kept talking with Pop, while he drove the old Hudson, tapping his fingers on the wheel to Gogi. My brother pinched me one more time and I somehow stopped being afraid. THAT’S what I remember. That’s what this song reminds ‘me’ of.
