The Wayward Wind
Gogi Grant Lyrics

The wayward wind is a restless wind
A restless wind that yearns to wander
And he was born the next of kin
The next of kin to the wayward wind

In a lonely shack by a railroad track
He spent his younger days
And I guess the sound of the outward-bound
Made him a slave to his wand'rin ways

And the wayward wind is a restless wind
A restless wind that yearns to wander
And he was born the next of kin
The next of kin to the wayward wind

Oh I met him there in a border town
He vowed we'd never part
Though he tried his best to settle down
I'm now alone with a broken heart

And the wayward wind is a restless wind
A restless wind that yearns to wander
And he was born the next of kin
The next of kin to the wayward wind

The next of kin to the wayward wind

My mom, a southern black woman in every sense, bought this and played it for me when I was very young. She told me later that she received a lot of flack when she played this for some of her friends, so she played it in private. So this song became our little secret for years. We were both die-hard blues and R&B fans, but, what she tried to teach me is that good music is good music and to not be afraid to like what you like. This song is one pleasure I will never feel guilty about. Thanks Gogi and thanks Mom.

A good song is a good song. Patsy Cline did a better version, in my opinion.

@Mark Marquette Been there...and can resonate. Today, my daughter (at the tender age of 19 works for a corporation -divorcing all the foolish trends and making a difference to society). What more can a father ask?

Donald Morrow, I wish I had the privilege of knowing your mom.I listen to everything, country, late 60&s on,Rock(AC/DC anyone?)R&B..The only thing I can't listen to is so called music that has a curse every other word!

This song has a beauty that does not go out of date. Timeless and awesome. One of my favorites of all time.

There is a sadness and a beauty in your memory of your Mom and her choice of music. How sad that people can't just enjoy each other, and how beautiful that your Mother could. Thank you for sharing your story. I will remember it always.
