1) Gojira is a metal band from Bayonne, France. Their lyrics focus on life, ecology, and spiritual themes. They were formed in 1996 by brothers Joe Duplantier (vocals and lead guitar) and Mario Duplantier (drums), Christian Andreu (guitar) and Alexandre Cornillon (bass guitar). Cornillon left the band in 2001 and Jean-Michel Labadie became their bass player. Genres that they have been associated with over their career include death metal, progressive metal, thrash metal and groove metal.
They had initially named their group Godzilla, but due to legal constraints had to change their name. They therefore chose to re-name their band Gojira - the original Japanese version of their name (in Japanese Gojira means gorilla-whale or gorilla the size of a whale). Some of the content of their music is focused on the ecological effects of human activity on the Earth.
Joe and Mario Duplantier also play in an experimental metal band called Empalot.
In 2007 Joe also became the bass player for former Sepultura members Max and Igor's new project, Cavalera Conspiracy.
2) Canadian powerviolence band existing from 1996-1998 based in Toronto, Ontario.
Wolf Down the Earth
Gojira Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
No matter they pray for freedom they'll kill you
Forward you crush those going backwards
The wolves are now your lords
Voracious flames upon the earth
Second step you eat all the creation
Swallow the trees, the lakes and all the valleys
Deeper than ocean blue
Burning all that, burning all that
They teach you how to conquer and rule the world
The towers that you built so strong, no man can touch
They tell you how to find and raise the fears
And let them grow inside of your heart, they need no walls
Is there a chance you face the void inside?
Winds of doom will blow your pride away
Behold the bright lights coming down on time
Before these altars black made for your sacrifice
You take for granted what's been there for ages
Inside the womb the new blood gets ready to fight
The buildings of our fathers
Crumbling in dark vibrations
Wolf down the one that made us all
No hope, you wolf down the earth
The lyrics to Gojira's song Wolf Down the Earth depict a dystopian future where humans have become vicious beasts and have devoured everything in their path, including the very earth that sustained them. The song speaks about the destruction of nature and how humans have become slaves to their own greed and have lost touch with their humanity. The first verse describes how humans have become cannibalistic and will even consume their own kind, and have taken over as the rulers of the earth. The imagery in the second verse is even more apocalyptic as it describes how humans are consuming everything in their path, from the smallest trees to the largest bodies of water. In the final verse, the song speaks about how humans have built their own prisons, and how they will eventually face the consequences of their actions.
The song is a wake-up call for humanity to take responsibility for their actions and to recognize the importance of preserving the earth. It is a warning of what may happen if we continue to ignore the consequences of our actions and allow greed and consumption to overcome our humanity.
