In Golden Child's "Singing In The Rain," the lyrics express the longing for someone on a rainy day. The song starts with the image of an old piano and some awkward lyrics that may make the listener laugh but could make the person one misses smile. The next line compares the rainy weather outside to the loneliness inside. The lyrics express the wish to walk in the rain with the person one misses. The chorus "Singing in the rain, Rain drop the theme, 내가 줄 수 있는 게 노래 밖에는 없지만 (All I can offer is a song), Dreaming in the rain, 내리는 비처럼 너는 그냥 들어주면 돼 (Just listen like the falling rain), 이 노래 (This song)" is the singer's declaration that all they can do is offer a song to the person they miss.
The second verse continues the longing for the person missed. It describes how a beautiful raindrop day and music make them want to say the things they didn't have the opportunity to say. The lyrics express that the singer wants to say those awkward words of love to the person they miss. The bridge combines the idea of the singer's dreams and the rainy-day theme. It talks about holding hands and crossing the black sea, which implies that the person they miss is their lighthouse in the storm. From the way the MV was filmed, it allows for a layer of interpretations--the simplest one is that Bomin's character suffers from unrequited love with the girl, and following that is his jealousy as a friend since Joochan's character and the girl are in their own little world and he can't help but feel left out.
Interestingly, however, we see Bomin's eyes drift up to focus not on the girl, but on Joochan's character at the very end, so now we're faced with the question: was it the girl Bomin was looking at, or was it actually Joochan? And in fact, this alternate reading is equally as plausible because of how well Bomin performed and the camera work. Since Joochan and the actress are always positioned next to each other, it's very difficult to pinpoint the object of Bomin's gaze. The acting doesn't show anything about a love triangle either; Bomin ultimately pretends he doesn't notice to keep the status quo.
One other thing of note is how Bomin is coded black here (both his suit and the umbrella), while Joochan's suit is white and the umbrella is red. Black is a color commonly associated with nothingness and death, so it's implied that he chooses to be passive and he hides away his feelings. The white outfit, on the other hand, is reminiscent of innocence and purity, while red is the color of love, so this is in complete contrast to Bomin's character.
Although this duo didn't win the MV making competition, the quality and depth of the MV deserves respect. It fully expresses the bittersweet and melancholic air of the song, and it's definitely one of my favorite GolCha unit songs!
