The Song Is Over
Golden Earring Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
For you I say our praise is sung
Tell the collar on the sky
A new rose in the universe
Sing a lullaby
More... ...out of dirt
So close to me
He robbed me of my strangerhood
The song's over
The song's over now
Assuming our sad goodbye
The song's over the tune stays in my mind
Baby, baby sing it one more time
Close to my ear
Mellow toned vibrations come
Sadness disappears
Do it to me once again
Before you say goodbye
Embrace me softly with your smile
The song's over
The singer said goodbye
The song's over
It's Doomsday on my mind
I close my eyes and sail away
The juke-box played your song today
Tomorrow has been like your yesterday
I can't forget what you used to say
Open your eyes and live my love!
You see it's not me you're dreaming of
Though it seems so important now
Singing makes it all seem so good somehow
The song's over
At first glance, "The Song Is Over" by Golden Earring seems to be about the end of a relationship. The singer says goodbye to their lover, singing a final song before they part ways. The opening lines, "Radar love, for you I say our praise is sung," echo the band's 1973 hit "Radar Love." However, as the song continues, it becomes clear that the focus is on more than just a romantic breakup. The lyrics suggest a wider sense of loss and disillusionment, possibly inspired by the tumultuous political and social climate of the time it was released. The line "It's Doomsday on my mind" emphasizes that the sorrow and endings being sung about go beyond just personal relationships.
The chorus insists that "the song's over," yet it stays with the singer, who desperately wants to hear it one more time. The nostalgia in the final lines, "I can't forget what you used to say / Open your eyes and live my love," hint at a broader sense of regret, perhaps towards lost opportunities or memories of a seemingly simpler past. The song's use of celestial language ("Tell the collar on the sky," "A new rose in the universe") adds a mystical and bittersweet quality to the song's themes.
