In contrast to the Gondang Hasapi it is a large ensemble played outdoors.
Gondang Sabangunan is a gondang sarune ensemble featuring the following instruments:
First sarune (oboe), second sarune, taganing a.k.a. tataganing (a set of five tuned drums played by one player with two sticks), gordang (large bass drum) and ogung (a set of four gongs) and a hesek (typically a sheet of iron or a bottle).
Gondang Sabangunan musicians have inherited the tradition begun by Tilhang Gultom, who pioneered the "Batak Opera" (a form of popular theatre set to music).
Well known Gondang Sabangunan musicians are Kalabius Simbolon who has his own group in Pematang Siantar, Osner Gultom, Maningar Sitorius and the brothers Sarikawan Sitohang and Marsius Sitohang. Most of them also play in a Gondang Hasapi type ensemble. Osner Gultom and Maningar Sitorius belong to the religious group of the Parmalim and play in a traditional group in Porsea, which also performs during the religious ceremonies of the Parmalim.
