The Rattler
Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm coming down the line
I'm a rattling boy
Rattling through the countryside
I'm a rattling boy
I just live from day to day
I'm a rattling boy
Eatin' them, cheatin' them, on my way
I'm a rattling boy
I'm going down the line
I'm going to a better time
I'm going to a better place
I don't like people to know my face
I can help get those feet out of that clay
But I can't take you all the way

I'm as stationary as a stream
I am aimless in extreme
I hold what I need in my right hand
I'm a rattling boy
I do the work my gut demands
I'm a rattling boy
I'm going down the line
I'm going to a better time
I'm going to a better place
I don't like people to know my face
I can help get those feet out of that clay
But I can't take you all the way

If I could hold you
If I could love you
Then I would do

I can help get those feet out of that clay
But I can't take you all the way

I'm a rattling boy
Rattling boy

I can't take you all the way
I won't take you all the way

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "The Rattler" by Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie depict a character who is a vagabond, constantly moving from place to place. The titular rattler lives a transient lifestyle, going wherever the wind takes him, and seems to have no set objective in life. The rattler is content with his way of life, living day by day and taking what he needs when he needs it โ€“ even if it means cheating other people. The song hints at a desire for a better life and a better place, but the rattler is elusive and does not want people to know his face.

The rattler likens himself to a stream, stationary yet constantly moving. He follows his gut and lives life as freely as he can, holding onto what he needs only in his right hand. There seems to be a sense of restlessness and aimlessness to the rattler's character, perhaps indicating a lack of fulfillment despite his seemingly carefree existence. The recurring line "I'm a rattling boy" emphasizes the rattler's identity as a wanderer, someone who is always on the move and cannot remain in one place for too long.

@@iainstirling1475 Saw a lot of good bands at the QMU - we had a belter of a flat at the corner of Otago and Gibson. Could only afford it as we shared rooms. Ppl wouldn't do that now - Mummy and Daddy pay! I worked in the Boston Pizza Precinct for ยฃ2 an hour. Loved that job!
