Tea For Two
Gordon MacRae Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Picture you upon my knee
Just tea for two and two for tea
Me for you and you for me alone

Nobody near us
To see us or hear us
No friends or relations
On weekend vacations
We won't have it known, dear
That we own a telephone (oh, I hate telephones) (yeah, me too)

Day will break and you'll awake
And start to bake a sugar cake
For me to take
To all the boys to see

Oh, we will raise a family
A boy for you, a girl for me
Oh, can't you see
How happy we would be?

(Oh, hit me with that tag)

We will raise a family
A boy for you, six little girlies for me

Can't you see
How happy we would be?

Overall Meaning

The song "Tea for Two" by Gordon MacRae is filled with sentiments about wanting to create the perfect home and life with one's beloved. The lyrics convey a sense of dissatisfaction with the life that the singer currently leads and the desire to create a better one. The first line in the song, "I'm discontented with homes that are rented so I have invented my own," captures this sense of wanting to create something better for oneself. The singer describes a place that is a "lover's oasis" where the lights they chase are unknown. This vision of a perfect home is far from the cry of the city where flowers pretty caress the stream, and it is cozy to hide in and live side by side without anything getting in their way.

The second part of the song goes into more detail about what life in this perfect home would look like. The singer imagines a world where they can be alone without anyone near to see or hear them or to disturb their peace. They want to be able to go on weekend vacations where they won't have to worry about anyone knowing they own a telephone. The idea is to create a life that is just for them, without any outside distractions or influences. They dream of raising a family, with a boy for her and a girl for him, and they can already picture a future where they are all happy together.

So I have invented my own.
Darling, this place is lovely oasis
Where life's weary taste is unknown
Far from the crowded city
Where flowers pretty caress the stream
Cozy to hide in, to live side by side in,
Don't let it apart in my dream

Picture you upon my knee
Just tea for two
And two for tea
Just me for you
And you for me alone

[NANETTE:]
Nobody near us to see us or hear us Mm, mm, mm,

And start to bake a sugar cake
For you to take for all the boys to see

Will we ever hear such a beautiful baritone voice like this again?

Tim Pyle

Probably not. Those days are gone. Farewell.

Have been a fan of Gordon MacRae since 1947…before “The Railroad Hour,” radio show, and now at the age of nearly 86 I still get a thrill when I see and hear him and that fabulous voice! So sad he died much too young.

The intro verse to this song is spectacular and more beautiful than the actual song itself. And does Gordon McCrea ever deliver it to Doris Day! I can't even describe how wonderful his voice is!

Gordon MacRae had a "superior" voice, great technique and sound. Doris Day was a wonderful singer. Love all her work.

I always loved this song. The words are so romantic. Gordon and Doris perform it so well. Doris Day did mot have good marriages. But she rose above it and never let it affect her movie roles! 🥰👍

Two wonderful simgers

What a lovely version of a great song by two wonderful singers. May they RIP.
