El Mañana
Gorillaz/James Dring/Jason Cox Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Summer don't know me no more
Eager man, that's all

Summer don't know me
He just left me loathing myself
'Cause I do know, Lord
From you that
Just died, yeah

I saw that day
Lost my mind
Lord, I'll find
Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine

Don't stop the buck when it comes
It's the dawn, you'll see

Money won't get there
Ten years passed tonight
You'll flee

If you do that
I'll be some
To find you

I saw that day
Lost my mind
Lord, I'll find
Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine

I saw that day
Lost my mind
Lord, I'll find
Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine
Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine
Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine
Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine

Maybe in time
You'll want to be mine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Gorillaz's song 7 El Manana describe a narrator who feels lost and abandoned, particularly in relation to the passing of someone they were close to - someone who they refer to as "Lord." The summer "left me loathing myself" and "don't know me no more," indicating a sense of isolation and detachment. The singer expresses their desire to win back the affection of this lost loved one with the repeated refrain "Maybe in time/You'll want to be mine."

The line "Don't stop the buck when it comes/It's the dawn, you'll see" suggests a sense of fatalism or powerlessness in the face of the passage of time and changes that cannot be halted. The final lines about "Money won't get there/Ten years passed tonight/You'll flee" imply a sense of regret or missed opportunities, with the singer fearing that they may never be able to reconnect with this person.

Overall, the lyrics of 7 El Manana are poignant, melancholic, and tinged with a sense of longing and hopelessness. It is a reflection on the ways in which we can feel adrift and incomplete without the people we love, and the deep desire we have to recapture what has been lost - even when we know it may be impossible.

I loved how back in the 00's people would theorize what happen after this music video. Those were cool times.

@rzta8209

Keeping up with Gorillaz lore all the way through Plastic Beach was the best

@KaiTexel

I remember watching it in the library in high school (maybe 2009?)- I had the Gorillaz autobiography which mostly filled in the gaps... but the more vague lore bits were always the most interesting

@edwardfetner2513

It did look pretty dire
