The Garden
Gosdin Vern Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She planted roses the first year we married
It soon was a garden we'd go walking through
My job kept me traveling but when I came home to heaven
She was so proud to show me all the love that she grew

I heard her talking one day to a old friend
She said I don't want to hurt him but it's out of control
I feel so guilty 'cause he'll be so helpless
He won't understand why I just got to go.

Now I come to the garden alone
All my reasons I once had for living are gone
Sometimes when I feel like I just cant go on
I come to the garden alone.

No one can imagine just how much I miss her
I'd give up this whole world to once more hold her near
It's just beyond me on why god took her from me
I bet the flowers in heaven are looking better this year.

Where the dew kissed the roses
Where weeds now have grown

Overall Meaning

The Garden by Gosdin Vern is a heartfelt song that tells the story of a man whose wife created a beautiful garden for him. The song opens with the man recalling how his wife planted roses in their garden during the first year of their marriage, which later turned into a magnificent garden that they would walk through. Despite the man’s frequent traveling for work, his wife continued to take care of the garden and would show him all the love that she grew upon his arrival home. However, the song takes a tragic turn when the man overhears his wife talking to a friend, saying that she doesn’t want to hurt him, but she needs to leave him. The man is devastated, and her absence makes the garden a place of solace for him, where he can come alone and reflect on his life.

The garden in this song is a metaphor for the relationship between the man and his wife. It represents the love and care that his wife put into their marriage and how, after she left, the beauty of their relationship was replaced by the overgrowth of weeds. The garden also becomes a place of comfort and reflection for the man, as he tries to come to terms with the loss of his wife. The lyrics of the song are poignant and evoke powerful emotions of love, loss, and sorrow.

3 Chords and a sad story, with a steel guitar crying in the background. Pop Country can't touch this...

The older he got, the better he sounded in my opinion. He's gone now but left us lots of great music!

Absolutely, love Veron Gosdin. His voice reminds me of george jones. Gone but not forgotten.

I managed Vern for many years and this was my favorite of his songs. In1980 I hired him to open shows for us with George Jones...a long time and many great days, years and times.  "The Story of Vern Gosdin"

What a nice guy you are Gerald Murray. Giving Vern Gosdin a chance to sing with George Jones. Fern must have been thrilled to have such an enterprising experience. When did Fern die? Hiss misses Pa.

@MrGm9018

Angela Shroyer Vern died April 28, 2009 after several mini strokes. The last shows we did , Greenville, TX, Shreveport, LA and another TX date, that I can't remember. Vern went back and did one show in Natchez, MS ...I didn't go..he walked on the stage and did one song and left. That was the end of a long road and many millions of miles of shows from small town USA to Costa Rica and all in between , many good times, many laughs, many sarcastic remarks from Vern. Every day was another page in a book. One Sunday he drug me all over Nashville to buy a drill for each of us. I ask him later if he needed a drill and he said, "No ,did you"?

@Gerald Murray Vern was a hoot, Pal. I worked on his publishing a couple years and called him an ambulance for his stroke in Bellevue. From his gurney inside the ambulance, he said: Little Girl, when I get up outta here, I'm kicking your ass🤣. I miss him. Hope you are well. He always spoke highly of you.

M.R Murray I know you managed the great George Jones during some pretty tough years in the early 1980s...and I salute you..... It could not have been easy lol.

When mom knew her days were numbered, she told me to listen to this song and help my dad get thru things. She had a way of saying few words but spoke volumes well dad is with her now. The garden you planted has produced so much love and kindness we all miss you both❤❤❤
