John Payne, Guthrie Govan, Jay Schellen and Ryo Okumoto. All four men have left their mark indelibly stamped on the music world. John Payne joined venerable rock legends ASIA back in 1991 after John Wetton’s final departure. Over the next 15 years, John would lead Asia through some of their most critically and fan acclaimed works. All this culminated with the highly successful “Silent Nation” album in 2004 and the subsequent world tour. “Silent Nation” was the most successful Asia release since the bands heady career highs of the early 1980s.
Guthrie Govan has been a prodigy on the strings since he was a small boy. He is one of the most respected musicians in guitar circles today. He joined Asia in 2001 during the recording sessions for their “Aura” album. His distinctive style has left his signature on the tracks from Asia’s “Aura” and “Silent Nation” releases. Guthrie’s string wizardry has thrilled fans across the world as he lent his talents to Asia classics old and new to hungry audiences everywhere.
Jay Schellen first burst onto the scene in the early 80s, lending his considerable talents to such notable bands as Hurricane, Bad Finger and most recently Asia. He also was a major part of the “Conspiracy” project head up by Chris Squire (Yes) and Billy Sherwood (Yes). Jay has also lent his skills to a formidable list of projects that have shown his incredible diversity and adaptability in the drumming field. John Payne first met Jay during the writing sessions for Asia’s “Silent Nation” album. From the first demos, it was clear that Jay was a force to be reckoned with. And in 2005 when the Asia drum throne became vacant, John’s first call was to Jay. His dynamic playing took the second half of the Asia world tour and elevated it to the next level.
Ryo Okumoto’s resume reads like a who’s who of the music world. Besides his ever present role as keyboardist in prog rock favorites, Spock’s Beard, Ryo has lent his considerable talents to many recording and live projects. Rock legends like Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Robbie Robertson, Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson and many, many more have called on Ryo’s magic fingers. His distinctive style was a welcome addition to the GPS sound.
With all the pieces in place, these four power houses of musical talent joined forces under the banner GPS. With the music firmly rooted in the prog sensibilities that defined many of their individual projects, GPS has taken all of their contributions and raised the bar. From the invigorating guitar solos contributed by Guthrie to the rock steady beats brought to bear by Jay, the music marks a new era for all of these talented musicians. John Payne’s vocals have never sounded better and Ryo’s keyboards somehow tie the whole thing into the potent musical brew that is GPS. Welcome to the future.

I still see you within my world
Burns so bright, the candle shows the way
We follow even now
There will be a place, there will be a time
I'll see you again dear friend of mine
Day by day as memories fade to grey
One so strong, the flame will never die
Somewhere you still breathe on
There must be a place, there must be a time
I will see you again good friend of mine
You just live for the moment
Guess you broke all the rules
And you had all you did want
But fate stepped in and took the dream away
You just live for the moment
Taking all that you see
Summer lasts for a long time
But fate stepped in and took the dream away
There must be a space
There must be a time
I will se you again
Good friend of mine
You just live for the moment
Yes you broke all the rules
And you had all you did want
But fate stepped in and took the dream away
You live for the moment
Taking all that you see
Summer smiled for a long time
But fate stepped in and took your world away
The song Taken Dreams by Gps is a deeply emotional piece about the loss of a friend and the pain and longing that comes with it. The lyrics describe the slow fading away of memories as time passes, but at the same time the singer still feels the presence of their lost friend within their world. The repetitive and strong imagery of a burning candle symbolizes hope and direction, leading to the eventual reunion with their friend in another time and place. The chorus poignantly captures the sense of loss and the harshness of fate, as the singer laments the stolen dream of a lifetime with the friend they cherished, but also celebrates the moments of joy and fulfillment that they had together.
The lyrics of Taken Dreams powerfully convey the idea of living in the moment, of seizing the day and enjoying life to its fullest while it lasts, as fate can take away everything in an instant. Despite the heartbreak and sorrow, the song ultimately brings a message of hope and comfort, as the singer holds onto the belief that they will see their friend again in the future, in a place where memories never fade and dreams can finally be fulfilled.

Day by day the memory fades to grey
As time passes, the memory of you becomes less clear
I still see you within my world
But I can still see you in my mind's eye
Burns so bright, the candle shows the way
The fire of our friendship still burns strong, leading me on my path
We follow even now
And I am still following that path
There will be a place, there will be a time
I hold onto the hope that someday we will meet again
I'll see you again dear friend of mine
And we will be reunited once again
You just live for the moment
You lived your life day by day
Guess you broke all the rules
You didn't let any conventions hold you back
And you had all you did want
You were content with what you had
But fate stepped in and took the dream away
But fate can be cruel and take away what we desire most
Taking all that you see
You lived your life to the fullest
Summer lasts for a long time
You enjoyed all the good things in life for a long time
But fate stepped in and took the dream away
But eventually, fate caught up with you and changed everything
There must be a space
But I still believe that there is a place for us to meet again
I will see you again good friend of mine
And we will pick up where we left off as if nothing ever changed
You live for the moment
You seized the day with all your might
Summer smiled for a long time
You enjoyed the good life for an extended period
But fate stepped in and took your world away
But sadly, in the end, fate took away everything you had

Absolutely love the way Guthrie plays acoustic. Realy nice rhythm playing ideas and melodic soloing.
@Slears
Normaly I get frustrated when I see great Guitarplayers on Youtube..but Guthrie always manages to make we want to play Guitar..and practise. I know I will never ever be even close to him..but I love what he does..and I try to reach my Top. Thanks Mr. Govan!!
@SlayeCohen
Well, playing in the same level isn't that hard tbh, with lots of hours and the right training you can achieve that, hard thing would be able to compose anything he has ever composed haha, i can play some of the hardest songs that most guitarrists play, but i think i would never compose something in the same level i play =/

Gutheri is the God of the era....
@jhfeil
Wish Guthrie would play acoustic a bit more often. Love it!
