You Want Love
Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wish I had a dime for every bad time
But the bad times always seem to keep the change
You been all alone so you know what I'm sayin'
So when all you can recall is the pain

[Chorus]
Just you wait until tomorrow when you wake up with me
At your side and find I haven't lied about nothin'
I wouldn't trade a tree for the way I feel about you
In the mornin', anyhow I love you

Everyday it gets just a little bit better
And half the gettin' there is knowin' where I been before
I'm sure you understand 'cause I ain't your first man
So when you feel like runnin' for the back door, don't

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The song "You Want Love" by Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris is a ballad that talks about a couple who have been through tough times in their past relationships. The first stanza of the song sets the tone for the rest of the song where Gram Parsons talks about the number of bad times he has been through in his life. He wishes he had a dime for every bad time but sadly, the bad times seem to outnumber the good ones, and they always seem to keep the change. He then sings to his partner, who also knows what it feels like to be alone, that pain is all they can recall.

The chorus of the song brings a hope of a new beginning, where everything would change for the better. The singer implores his lover to wait until the next day where he would be by her side and show her that he hasn't lied about anything. The singer expresses his love for his partner, stating that he wouldn't trade anything for the way he feels about her, and he loves her in the morning and always.

The second stanza of the song talks about how things get better every day, and half the journey is knowing where he has been before. He also tells his partner, who has been with other men in the past, that he understands her fears and insecurities, and he assures her that if she feels like running for the backdoor, she doesn't have to. In summary, "You Want Love" is a love song that encourages couples to remain faithful to each other and stand by each other in good and bad times.

Love hurts, love scars
Love wounds and mars
Any heart not tough
Nor strong enough
To take a lot of pain
Take a lot of pain
Love is like a cloud
Holds a lot of rain
Love hurts
Mmm-mm, love hurts
I'm young, I know
But even so
I know a thing or two
I've learned from you
I've really learned a lot
Really learned a lot
Love is like a stove
Burns you when it's hot
Love hurts
Mmm-mm, love hurts
Some fools think of happiness
Blissfulness, togetherness
Some fools fool themselves, I guess
But they're not fooling me
I know it isn't true
Know it isn't true
Love is just a lie
Made to make you blue
Love hurts
Mmm-mm, love hurts
Love hurts
Mmm-mm, love hurts
Oh-oh, love hurts

I saw them together at a gig when I was in college only 6 months before he died. They were like young bandits on the run, totally with each other and beautiful. Such a terrible loss for music and for her heart.

@gerardlangver5202

The chemistry between the two makes me listen and listen again.

Beautiful song my nephew who did 3 tours in Afghanistan (last tour his humvee hit a landmind killing everyone except him)passed today in Albuquerque hospital from cirrhosis,first song I played today

@PersianDiamond

Man oh man. So. I saw your post and wanted to response. My oldest son was a corpsman attached to front line Marines in Afghanistan. He would often be in the humvee convoys with them.
He came back but not the same, never will be again. The alcoholism he came back with I know all too well.. the screaming in dreams.. a harrowing experience that I don't think any of us civilians could understand. Seeing injuries and Sui*ci*e and death and sorrow at such a young age while being in a sandbox of another country... it does something to them.
With all my heart.. I'm so so sorry for the loss of your nephew. It's utterly tragic.
I wish you the very best and from this stranger on the internet to you I send you love and a hug.
Signed. A former military mom

I listen to this over and over. It is such a beautiful blend of voices...and words. Oh the pain of love!!!

@dougnewsam6905

Incredible harmonies by the two of them. Their voices were made to be together.
Shame that his life was so short. He would have been a bigger star.

@davidmurray2539

I can't imagine that this is anything but the crowning achievement in the history of alt/country music! Rarest of significant moments, no matter what their nature, are capable of forcing people to stop in their tracks and give total attention. This recording is such a moment.

@SeverSTL

I've never heard two voices blend better.

@petertaggart8564

Doesn't get any better than this
