Death Don't Have No Mercy
Grateful Dead Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Y'know death don't have no mercy in this land
Death don't have no mercy in this land, in this land
Come to your house, you know he don't take long
Look in bed this morning, children find your mother gone.

I said death don't have no mercy in this land.
Death will leave you standing and crying in this land,
Death will leave you standing and crying in this land, in this land, yeah!

Whoa! come to your house, why' know he don't stay long,
Why' look in bed this morning,
Children you find that your brothers and sisters are gone.
I said death don't have no mercy in this land.

Death will go in any family in this land.
Death will go in any family in this land.
Come to your house, you know he don't take long.
Look in the bed on the morning, children find that your family's gone.

I said death don't have no mercy in this land.
Death will leave you standing and crying in this land,
In this land. whoa! come to your house,
Why' know it don't stay long, why' look in bed this morning,
Children find that your brothers and sisters are gone.

I said death don't, death don't have no mercy in this land.

Overall Meaning

"Death Don't Have No Mercy" by the Grateful Dead is a traditional blues track that was a staple in the band's early days. The song warns of the ever-present threat of death and its indiscriminate nature. The lyrics suggest a sense of powerlessness and inevitability in the face of death’s grip on life. The lyric "Come to your house, you know he don't take long" suggests that death can strike at any moment, without warning. The reference to "looking in bed" in the morning and finding a loved one gone highlights the suddenness and disorientation of encountering death. The repetition of the simple phrase "death don't have no mercy in this land" drives home the song’s sobering message.

The song also acknowledges the universal impact of death, regardless of social status or circumstance. It notes that "Death will go in any family in this land", affirming that death is a force that strikes everyone, regardless of their background or status. The line "Death will leave you standing and crying in this land" articulates the raw emotion that death evokes, suggesting that grief is an inevitable byproduct of the loss of someone close. The big Death Don’t return! Never saw it on video before. Good loud recording. God damn tell me Brent was the secret heart and soul of the band—-pure raw emotion and devotion during his verse and solo—then it cuts to Jerry just wailing while biting his bottom lip. That’s how it is with the boys, one little detail like that made my night. Prayers and vibes for buddy Eric who is currently laying in his bed and dying. Needed some dark Dead tonight to fuel my mood

Jerry doesn’t get the respect for his guitar skills. Guitar lists used to least put him in the top ten in the 90’s. He’s already forgotten to way too many. His guitar playing is absolutely in the top 5. He’s incredible. He could roll those scales as good as anyone ever. His playing was dripping with style. Man is he missed

(That’s the sound Garcia’s guitar makes going over people’s heads)

Martin Slade

I saw a list where Jerry was number 49 behind Taylor Swift.
