Holiday
Green Day / Cast of American Idiot Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hear the sound of the falling rain
Coming down like an Armageddon flame (hey!)
A shame
The ones who died without a name

Hear the dogs howlin' out of key
To a hymn called faith and misery (hey!)
And bleed, the company lost the war today

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
On holiday

Hear the drum pounding out of time
Another protester has crossed the line (hey!)
To find, the money's on the other side

Can I get another Amen (Amen!)
There's a flag wrapped around a score of men (hey!)
A gag, A plastic bag on a monument

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
On holiday

"The representative from California has the floor"

Sieg Heil to the president gasman
Bombs away is your punishment
Pulverize the Eiffel towers
Who criticize your government
Bang bang goes the broken glass and
Kill all the fags that don't agree
Trials by fire setting fire
Is not a way that's meant for me
Just cause
Just cause
Because we're outlaws yeah!

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies

This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
This is our lives on Holiday

Overall Meaning

The song 'Holiday' by Green Day / Cast of American Idiot is a commentary on the state of the world, the disastrous effects of war, and the corruption of those in power. The lyrics convey a sense of despair, disillusionment, and frustration with the state of affairs. The opening lines "Hear the sound of the falling rain, Coming down like an Armageddon flame" conveys the sense of doom that seems to be looming over the world. The reference to Armageddon alludes to the biblical prophecy that describes a final battle between the forces of good and evil.

The second stanza of the song talks about the loss of life and the futility of war. The line "The ones who died without a name" highlights the fact that many people have given their lives in wars without any recognition or acknowledgment. The reference to dogs howling out of key to a hymn called "faith and misery" alludes to the manipulation of people's religious beliefs to justify wars.

The third stanza of the song is a call to arms for people to stand up and fight against the system. The line "Can I get another Amen" is a reference to the civil rights movement where people would say "Amen" after someone made a powerful statement. The chorus "I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies, This is the dawning of the rest of our lives, On holiday" is a message of hope and a call to action. The word "holiday" is used ironically to mean that people have the freedom to fight for their rights and make a difference.

I am a big Green Day fan and Who would of thought Broadway and Green Day would have ever worked. This is brilliant

anna oggier

+JOHNNYCFC24 it is the best!

Of course incomparable to Green Day themself, this is Broadway. I have so much respect for both (The band and performers) as a rock musical is never an easy thing to put on or trust a group of people to do! An album is like a child and Billie Joe Armstrong must have had a lot of trust in these guys to let them make it into "American Idiot!"
Broadway Edition

From what I have heard, the cast were all picked by the band personally, but I'm not sure if that's accurate

+Michael Anthony Marella Amazon prime has a documentary about the making of the Broadway show and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The band didn't hand pick performers per se but had tons of input and helped produce, giving final approval. they were very proud of it, and Billie Joe actually played Jimmy in some of the performances.
