1. The US post-rock, shoegaze band are originally from Richmond, Virginia, and now based in Brooklyn. They formed in 2000, took their name from writer Franz Kafka - author of the short story The Metamorphosis. The current members are Champ Bennett, Nikki King, Billy Bennett, Jeremiah Klinger, Cory Bise, Toby Driver and Mia Matsumiya. After the release of two EPs, Gregor Samsa and 27:36, and two splits with The Silent Type and Red Sparowes, Gregor Samsa delivered their much anticipated debut full-length 55:12, composed of eight songs submerged in dreamy, multi-layered post-rock atmospherics. In their next album, Gregor Samsa took a new approach to composition, both in process and instrumentation. The result was Rest, released in May of 2008 on Kora Records (US) and Own Records (Europe).

The gallows
I dreamt you the same heavenly
Lights all out in the city
And a stretch of home for you to come
Raise your arms
Up to the sky
And say your prayers
For when we wake
Well start to make our way
To find another one whose eyes
Where we shall sing
We shall sing
You and me
Raise your arms
Up to the sky
Now close your eyes
And say your prayers
For when we wake
We'll start to make our way
We've traveled far
Enough to know
We're not going back
We've come too far
I can see the rivers
Up ahead of me
The song "Oo" by Gregor Samsa tells a story of two individuals who have escaped what seems like a dangerous situation, possibly from a hanging/gallows, and are seeking refuge in another place. The lyrics mention the "lights all out in the city" which could be interpreted as a bleak or desolate atmosphere, but they also mention a "stretch of home for you to come" which could symbolize a hopeful future.
The chorus insists that the two will continue to sing and travel together. "Raise your arms up to the sky" and "say your prayers" sound like a hopeful and determined call to action, with the assurance that they've "traveled far enough to know we're not going back." The final line, "I can see the rivers up ahead of me" could represent new paths, opportunities, or experiences that the two will encounter. It sounds like a song of hope and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Out we ran
We hurriedly left the place
The gallows
The execution site
I dreamt you the same heavenly
I saw you in a blissful and happy dream
Lights all out in the city
There is darkness and silence in the town
And a stretch of home for you to come
A long way home is waiting for you.
Raise your arms
Lift up your hands
Up to the sky
Toward the heavens
Now close your eyes
Shut your eyelids
And say your prayers
Recite your devotions
For when we wake
Once we arise
Well start to make our way
We will move forward
To find another one whose eyes
To look for someone else's gaze
Where we shall sing
A place where we will sing
We shall sing
We will raise our voices
You and me
Only you and I
We've traveled far
We have journeyed a great distance
Enough to know
Sufficient to understand
We're not going back
We won't return
We've come too far
For us, the path is too long
I can see the rivers
I can observe the streams
Up ahead of me
Up, in front of me
