Driving homeward slo
Shimmer like you do to me we laugh at all those changing trees
Autumn is fallin' down again...out of this blue Sunday dream
Come to me with your smoky mouth
Raindrops fall on this old town
It's been me and you who've been fallin' round
See I was nowhere near your neighborhood
But if this is all in our minds
Its all in our minds honey would you mind getting out of mine
If this is all in our heads, well now its screaming red
Watching the leaves fall down and laugh at us instead
In "All There Is" by Gregory Alan Isakov, the singer is reflecting on a drive back into the city with a loved one. They laugh and marvel at the changing colors of autumn as they approach their destination. The rain begins to fall as they reach their home, creating a sense of coziness and familiarity. However, the singer admits to lying to their partner about their whereabouts, as they were actually far from their neighborhood. This revelation suggests a sense of disconnect between the two, as well as the possibility that the romanticized moments they shared were simply in their minds.
The repetition of "if this is all in our minds" brings to mind the power of perception and how memories can be distorted or romanticized. The use of fall imagery, such as the leaves falling, suggests a sense of inevitability and change. The final line, "watching the leaves fall down and laugh at us instead," adds a touch of melancholy, implying that nothing is permanent or even necessarily real.
Overall, "All There Is" is a contemplative and introspective look at perception and the fleeting nature of love and memory. It encourages the listener to reflect on their own experiences and question the nature of reality.
