Formed as a side project to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, the band was originally known as Mini Seeds and was formed by Cave as "a way to escape the weight of The Bad Seeds." The band's name was inspired by a Memphis Slim song, Grinder Man Blues, which Cave is noted to have started singing during one of the band's early rehearsal sessions. The band's eponymous debut studio album, Grinderman, was released in 2007 to extremely positive reviews and the band's second and final studio album, Grinderman 2, was released in 2010 to a similar reception.
Following extensive touring after the release of Grinderman 2, Grinderman disbanded after a performance at the Meredith Music Festival in Victoria, Australia in December 2011. The band split up in order to focus on The Bad Seeds upcoming material. However, Jim Sclavunos later said: "I can't predict what the future of Grinderman is - if there is a future." The band reunited for a one-off performance at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California in April 2013.

Mad mullahs and dirty bombs
Alert the coastal command
Ack-Ack positions everyone
She's my honey bee and here she comes
Cancer, rabies, SARS
Hairy beards and hurtling stars
Won't somebody touch me?
Honey bee lets fly to Mars
Honey bee lets fly to Mars
Honey bee lets fly to Mars
Honey bee lets fly to Mars
Buzz buzz buzz buzz
There's a kid laying on the lawn
The neighbors on the telephone
The dispatcher asks "What's going on?"
"Please Sir, what's going on?"
The kid is laying on the lawn
He's been giving me shit for years
He rides his bike across my lawn
Now he's laying on the lawn
Won't somebody touch me?
Oh, won't someone please touch me!
Honey bee lets fly to Mars
Honey bee lets fly to Mars

The lyrics to Grinderman's "Honey Bee" are characterized by societal and cultural chaos. The first verse creates a sense of emergency and an atmosphere of danger, with references to "mad mullahs" and "dirty bombs," which call for the military to be on alert. The singer seems to be speaking from a place of fear, likely influenced by world events and anxieties about terrorism, epidemics, and other threats that pervaded the 2000s. However, amid all of the doom and gloom, the singer has a bright spot - "she's my honey bee and here she comes." In the face of all of the danger, the singer has a caring companion who brings light into their life.
The second verse describes a mundane domestic scene - a kid who's been causing trouble laying on the neighbor's lawn - but this is juxtaposed with the warlike imagery from the first verse. The singer is desperate for connection and touch, repeating the refrain "won't somebody touch me?" The final verse is a call for empathy and compassion. The "undefended" are in need of care, and the singer wants to be touched and kissed amidst all of the chaos. The repetition of "Honey bee, let's fly to Mars" is a call to escape the turmoil of the world and find refuge elsewhere, perhaps in the arms of a loved one. The buzzing at the end further emphasizes the chaos and confusion of the world.
