Grizzly Bear was originally the solo project of Edward Droste (vocals/guitar), who recorded his debut album Horn of Plenty at home. The record was originally meant for his friends, but it eventually circulated and got a proper release in 2004, this time with the help of Christopher Bear (drums/vocals). A re-release with a bonus disc of remixes was issued in 2005.
2005 also saw the addition of the two other band members, Chris Taylor (woodwinds/electronics/engineering/production) and Daniel Rossen (vocals/guitar). Playing as a four piece allowed the complexity of sound that was recorded on Horn of Plenty to be played live. The band toured throughout the year, playing songs off the first album as well as some of the new songs they were collectively writing that would make up Yellow House.
An album of Droste's early demo recordings, Sorry for the Delay, was released in 2006. Later that year they signed to Warp to release Yellow House on September 4th, 2006, to great acclaim.
In 2007, the band released Friend EP, which features outtakes, alternate versions, and covers done by CSS, Band of Horses, and Atlas Sound. In addition, members of the Dirty Projectors and Beirut collaborated with the band on "Alligator" and the EP's hidden track.
The band released their third full length album, Veckatimest, on May 26, 2009. After extensive touring, the band took a six month hiatus and then reconvened to record in Marfa, Texas and Cape Cod and released their fourth full length album, Shields, on September 18, 2012.
Deep Sea Diver
Grizzly Bear Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And underneath your current I do swim
A baker's dozen pretty pearls
And when I try them on my toes do curl
'Cause you, you got everything that I want
The car, the house, the dog
You got everything that I want
Just keep me a while
Just keep me a while (oh my)
Just keep me a while
Just keep me a while (oh my)
I'm a deep sea diver losing air
And around your laps I swim, but you don't care
The lyrics to Grizzly Bear's "Deep Blue Sea" are about a person who is completely enamored with someone else. The first verse describes this person as a deep sea diver who is swimming underneath the current of the person they love. The imagery of the deep sea diver and the pearls create a sense of longing and desire. The second verse, however, creates a contrast to the first verse. The person is now a deep sea diver who is losing air and swimming laps around the person they love, but the person doesn't seem to care. This juxtaposition between desire and indifference highlights the complexities of relationships and the emotions that come with them.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the singer's desire to stay with the person they love. The repetition of "just keep me a while" suggests a need for comfort and a desire to be close to the person, even if it is just for a little while.
Overall, "Deep Blue Sea" is a song about love, desire, and the complexities of relationships. It is a beautifully written piece that uses imagery to evoke powerful emotions in the listener.

This was the saddest band I discovered after my first marriage ended I came back to NYC from Belgium and randomly saw them perform on the LES. They were giving away CD's. I got one and listened to this on repeat while riding the subway and brown bagging 40s.

Coming back to this. High school soundtrack for me, running on the trail with my sansa clip and grizzly bear...Their early stuff I strongly prefer. I adore the lo-fi folk elements, nostalgia and emotion for me...They had quite a unique concoction back in the day. I wish they were still as brave and crazy as they were when they sparked
@grandpow
This is my favorite band forever

I always gravitate towards this album when I’m really depressed. Something about it’s stark, simple composition just fits perfectly with feeling alone. Music you can’t share with anyone else. It’s just for you

Probably one of the saddest Grizzly Bear albums...not as in it's bad, as in it's got a lot of songs that make me feel a bit emotional. Great album...the first album of theirs that I knew of and it grew on me a lot. I love all of their stuff...great musicians.
