Generations
Groves Sara Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can taste the fruit of Eve
I'm aware of sickness, death and disease
The results of our choices are vast
Eve was the first but she wasn't the last

And if I were honest with myself
Had I been standing at that tree
My mouth and my hands would be covered with fruit
Things I shouldn't know and things I shouldn't see

[Chorus]
Remind me of this with every decision
Generations will reap what I sow
I can pass on a curse or a blessing
To those I will never know

She taught me to fear the serpent
I'm learning the fear myself
And all of the things I am capable of
In my search for wisdom, acceptance and wealth

And to say that the devil made me do it
Is a cop out and a lie
The devil can't make me do anything
When I'm calling on Jesus Christ

[Chorus]

To my great, great, great grand daughter
Live in peace
To my great, great, great grand son
Live in peace
To my great, great, great grand daughter
Live in peace
To my great, great, great grand son
Live in peace, oh, live in peace

[Chorus]

Oh, remind me
Generations will reap what I sow
I can pass on a curse or a blessing

To those I will never know
Oh, I may never know

Overall Meaning

In Sara Groves' song Generations, she reflects on the story of Adam and Eve and the effects of their choices on subsequent generations. She acknowledges the weight of the knowledge of good and evil that Eve gained from eating the fruit, and how it led to sickness, death, and disease. Groves also acknowledges that if she were in Eve's place, she too would have been tempted to eat the fruit and gain that knowledge.

The chorus of the song is a plea for God to remind her of the consequences of her choices, and how they will affect future generations. She sees that she has the power to pass on either a blessing or a curse to those she will never meet. She points out that blaming the devil for her actions is a cop out, and that she must take responsibility for her decisions and call upon Jesus Christ for guidance. The song ends with a hope for future generations to live in peace.
