Father And Son
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Verse 1
Just a boy in the hills of Virginia
Music was his way of life
When the chores were all done, at the setting of sun
On the front porch they'd sing through the night

Chorus
We'd walk through the fields of clover
As he told me of the days of his life
He said son you must always remember
And carry it all of your days
The most precious gift, I've given to you
Is love from Father to Son
Love from Father to Son

Verse 2
A Father spends his whole lifetime learning
Lessons he passes along
I'm telling my own son my story
I'm telling you now in this song

Chorus
Now we walk through the fields of clover
And I tell him of the days of my life
I say son you must always remember
And carry it all of your days
The most precious gift, I've given to you
Is love from Father to Son
Love from Father to Son

Overall Meaning

In the song "Father and Son" from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, the lyrics depict a heartfelt and introspective narrative about the bond between a father and son. The song begins by introducing a young boy in the hills of Virginia, highlighting his deep connection to music. It reveals that music is not just a hobby for him but an integral part of his identity and way of life.

As the chores are completed and the sun sets, the boy and his father gather on the front porch and spend the night singing together. This emphasizes the significance of shared experiences and the power of music in bringing people closer. The chorus reflects on these moments, capturing the beauty of walking through fields of clover while the father imparts wisdom and shares stories from his own life with his son. The father stresses the importance of remembering these lessons and carrying them throughout life.

The second verse shifts the perspective to the present, as the son, now grown, becomes a father himself. He realizes that his role as a father comes with the responsibility of learning and passing down valuable lessons. He reflects on his own experiences and acknowledges that he is now sharing his own story with his son. Through this, he hopes to provide guidance and understanding, built on the foundation of love.

The chorus is repeated, illustrating the continued journey of walking through fields of clover, this time with the son hearing his father's stories and advice. The song emphasizes the enduring nature of the most valuable gift a father can give - love from father to son. It showcases the deep connection between generations and reinforces the importance of passing down wisdom and love from one generation to another.

The song ends with a tagline, reintroducing the boy in the hills of Virginia, emphasizing that his love and passion for music are integral parts of his identity throughout his entire life. Overall, "Father and Son" celebrates the timeless bond between fathers and sons, highlighting the significance of family, shared experiences, and love that transcends time.

Sean Gunn's yell gets me every time. This is easily one of the saddest/most cathartic moment in any Marvel movie. The amount of heart in the GOTG movies is the reason a relatively obscure comic team has been such a hit in theaters. Humor and heart go a long way.

@Demaad

Nathan Chiles Is there a gif of that scene somewhere? Does anyone have that gif? I’ve been looking forever but found nothing

@Blakblooded

@Dasan I haven't found one either. Its sooo good. Yells in movies normally come off as cheesy, this didn't. Gunn played it so well. And "Father and Son" was the perfect accompaniment.

@MaxMercuryAnonymous

It’s so real, though. Kraglin has always kind of been a joke character and clearly loved Yondu as some kind of mentor figure so to see him finally get his due would make any real person do that. It’s raw and real.
