Color of My Blade
Guided by Voices Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The color of my blade is red
Remember what you said
Perfection is killing the freaks yeah
Even as we speak yeah
Don't you
Now it was decided the war
The silence will rise to a shout yeah
You told us we'd see it through
The practical joker police came
To knock down doors and to leave blame
I remember what you told them
The color of my blade is golden
They didn't come back anymore
You should've decided to lay it out on the floor
Be sure to instruct them to leave you
Cause they no longer would believe you

It's worthless to you through
Don't you come back anymore

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Color of My Blade" by Guided by Voices are abstract and open to interpretation, but one possible reading is that the song is a critique of authority figures who claim to promote perfection and order, but in reality suppress individuality and creativity. The "blade" referred to in the song could represent the power or influence wielded by these figures. The color of the blade changing from red to golden could symbolize a shift in perspective, perhaps from anger or aggression to a more positive outlook.

The lyrics also mention a "war" and "practical joker police" who come to "knock down doors and leave blame". This could be interpreted as a commentary on authoritarian tactics used to enforce conformity and suppress dissent. The line "they no longer would believe you" suggests that the person singing the song was once under the sway of these authorities, but has since realized the truth and rejected their message.

One day back in 1995, a friend lent me a vinyl single with this song on the b-side; the only format it was available in at the time. Shortly thereafter, I started my own record collection.

Alien Lanes and Bee Thousand were basically albums of 5 star songs back to back for nearly an hour, so it's hard to understand why "Motor Away" was picked as the single, and why anyone would've picked it if the decision was theirs.

It has that classic GBV stamp of quality, as the band carelessly plays a song that any other band would stress over not ruining in any way shape or form.

+MrWolfSnack Hard how? Bee Thousand is irrelevant the the question as it had been released a year earlier; and regardless of how many great tracks are on Alien Lanes, Motor Away is probably the best of them and even if it isn't it has the most single-like qualities of the lot.

i've not heard this! Thanks for posting! GBV is awesome!

Méchant Manu

I know that the fact that Kim Deal produced his song, has nothing to do with Pollards songwriting, but this really does sound extremely Breederish and I fucking love it !
