Exit Flagger
Guided by Voices Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't know where I've come from
I don't know where I'm off to
And I need to find a way out
And he's here to help me find it

Exit Flagger
Exit Flagger
Exit Flagger
Exit Flagger
I'm not going to race you today

I need a life the same as
And I don't believe in anything
I promise to leave you one of these days
I promise it'll be real soon.

Exit Flagger
Exit Flagger
Exit Flagger
Exit Flagger
I'm not going to race you today

I promise to leave you
I promise to leave you

I promise to leave you
I promise to leave you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Guided by Voices' song Exit Flagger appear to be about the singer's struggle to find direction in life and how he needs assistance to find a way out. The first two lines indicate a sense of confusion and uncertainty about the singer's current situation and the path he should take. However, he does express a desire to find a way out, and he believes that the "Exit Flagger" can help him do so.

The chorus repeats the phrase "Exit Flagger" four times and is followed by the line "I'm not going to race you today." This could suggest that the singer does not want to compete with the "Exit Flagger" but rather would like to work with him to find a way out.

The third and fourth verses express the singer's dissatisfaction with his current life and beliefs. He wants a life that is similar to the "Exit Flagger" and does not believe in anything. The repetition of the phrase "I promise to leave you" could indicate a desire for change and a promise to move on from his current situation.

Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of confusion and a need for guidance in life. The "Exit Flagger" represents a guide or mentor who can help the singer find his way out of his current situation.

Bob called Tobin and said he had a song that he'd just worked out in his head and he HAD to meet up with him ASAP. He showed Tobin the guitar parts and Bob played drums and they recorded pretty much this version that appeared on the album.

Tobin said that it took maybe 20 MINUTES max from the time that Bob called him to the time that they laid it on tape
