Land of Danger
Guided by Voices Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, baby -- this is the land of danger (each and every home a battlefield)
Oh, baby -- this is the throat of a stranger (searching for the blood
That's now congealed)
Oh, baby -- this is a thick muddy mystery (tearing at the pages of our past)
Oh, baby -- this is the straight path of history (human motion -- land and
Ocean)

Try to run, try to hide
It's been a long, long, long, long long, long [long] time
[It's been a long, long, long, long, long time]

Oh, baby -- this is the fresh flesh of anger (calling out for action in the
Streets)
Oh, baby -- this is a slow running canker (opened up by victories and defeats)
Oh, baby -- this is the night of the dancer (dancing on a time bomb in my head)
Oh, baby -- this is the ultimate cancer (human notion -- fear in motion)

Try to run, try to hide
It's been a long, long, long, long long, long [long] time
[It's been a long, long, long, long, long time]

[Don't tell me everything's gonna work out anymore
Don't tell me everything's gonna work out anymore]

[Of danger, of danger, of danger, of danger]

[Don't tell me everything's gonna work out]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Guided by Voices' song, Land of Danger, depict a world full of danger, mystery, and fear. The opening lines, "Oh, baby - this is the land of danger (each and every home a battlefield)" introduce the song's central theme: danger is all around us, even in the safety of one's own home. The following lines illustrate the violent and unpredictable nature of this danger: "Oh, baby - this is the throat of a stranger (searching for the blood that's now congealed)." The sight of congealed blood suggests that the danger has been around for a while, lurking beneath the surface.

The second half of the song shifts its focus from physical danger to the internal turmoil of anger and fear. The lines, "Oh, baby - this is the fresh flesh of anger (calling out for action in the streets)" and "Oh, baby - this is the ultimate cancer (human notion - fear in motion)" suggest that the danger is not just physical but also emotional, and is deeply ingrained in human nature. The repetition of the phrase, "try to run, try to hide" emphasizes the futility of trying to escape from this danger.

Overall, the song provides a grim portrayal of the world we live in, one that is full of violence, mystery, and fear. While the lyrics are certainly dark, they force listeners to confront the realities of our world and acknowledge that danger is an ever-present threat.

better REM than REM.

Will Neill

probably one of the most underrated gbv riffs

Fender Bass

Wow, I'm shocked! I'm a long-time GBV fan, but never heard this until now. For their first record, I was expecting a grungy, muddy, murky, tape hiss-filled, lo-fi 4-track basement recording. Not this flawlessly clear, professionally recorded REM sound-alike. Not that there's anything wrong with that of course. It's a kick to hear Bob Pollard sounding like Michael Stipe instead of singing with a fake British accent. Excellent stuff.

I SO badly want to be able to get this itunes so I can add it to my EP cds

Beatle #9
