Radio Show
Guided by Voices Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Radio show, radio show
Trust the wizard, here we go
Radio show, radio show
Trust the wizard, don't say no
It's another day today
It's another day today
Alone he's alive he's alone he's alive
This is not another fad

It's another day today
It's another day today
Radio show, radio show
Trust the wizard, here we got
Radio show, radio show

Trust the wizard, can't say no
It's another day today...

Overall Meaning

The song "Radio Show" by Guided by Voices seems to be a tribute to the power of the medium of radio. The repeated refrain "trust the wizard" suggests that the wizard is the person who has control over the airwaves, and the listener should trust them to lead them on a journey through the music and stories that they broadcast. This is reinforced by the "here we go" and "can't say no" lines, which suggest that the listener is willingly following the wizard's lead and immersing themselves in the radio show experience.

However, the lyrics also suggest a sense of loneliness and isolation on the part of the listener. The repetition of "alone he's alive" suggests that the listener is seeking a sense of connection and community through the radio show, but that they still feel alone in their experience. This is reinforced by the final line "this is not another fad", which suggests that the listener is looking for something lasting and meaningful in the radio show, rather than just a passing trend.

Overall, "Radio Show" is a song that celebrates the transformative power of radio, but also acknowledges the sense of disconnection and longing that can be felt even in the midst of a communal experience.

In 1995 I came across the Box collection. I could quickly tell that all those wonderful songs were going to help shape the man, as well the musician, that I am today. It was my senior year in a small Mississippi Delta town and when I left for college I wasn't alone, because I had my buds, Guided By Voices, right there with me. And now, 18 years later, they are still with me, whether I'm "high on the hunt" or "amplified to rock". Sorry if that's corny but that's just how it is!
