You're Not an Airplane
Guided by Voices Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, come on now and see the course
That never fields the game of choice
And cold allies of steel
Couldn't buy the way it feels
Rusty and divided steel
The race is yet to come

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "You're Not an Airplane" by Guided by Voices are cryptic and open to interpretation. It seems to be a commentary on societal pressures and the struggle of individuals to find true meaning and purpose in a world that is constantly changing. The opening line, "Well, come on now and see the course," could be seen as an invitation to explore the path that one has chosen for oneself. However, this path is one that "never fields the game of choice," indicating that it is not necessarily the one that the individual would have chosen for themselves.

The next lines, "And cold allies of steel / Couldn't buy the way it feels / Rusty and divided steel," paint a picture of a world that is dominated by industrialization and machinery. The repetition of the word "steel" highlights the cold and unfeeling nature of this world. Despite the prevalence of this steel, it cannot buy the way it feels, meaning that material possessions cannot replace the human experience of genuine emotion.

The final line, "The race is yet to come," suggests that there is still time for individuals to find the race they want to run, the purpose they want to fulfill. This indicates that the struggle is ongoing, but it doesn't need to be a lost cause. Ultimately, the song is a reflection on the search for meaning in an increasingly complex and impersonal world.

The sheer genius of mid-1990's GbV is right here: an absolutely beautiful, gorgeous song that lasts only 34 seconds. It doesn't need to be any longer to make its mark and leave you emotionally gutted. This band took the lessons of Wire and the "Pink Flag" LP and used them to their advantage. Next to Mission of Burma, probably my favorite American band.

"Hit" on Alien Lanes clocks in about 20 seconds, but still a great little number. I think Napalm Death had a "song" that lasted about 1 second.
