As a teenager, he was a member of the band Os Polissonantes, which also featured Brazilian actor Kadu Moliterno on bass guitar. In 1969, Arantes started the band Moto Perpétuo with fellow students from São Paulo University (USP) Architecture course.
Arantes dropped out of university to dedicate himself to his solo career, and in 1976, his song "Meu Mundo e Nada Mais" (My world and nothing more) was picked by Brazil’s main TV station Rede Globo to be featured in the soundtrack of soap opera Anjo Mau. The song was a hit, and Arantes toured the country for the first time.
His first self-titled album was released the same year on Globo's Som Livre label. The song "Cuide-se Bem" (Take good care of yourself) from the same record, was also picked by Globo for another soap opera, Duas Vidas.
Arantes went on to write 23 additional songs for soap operas soundtracks, most of them becoming radio hits. Besides his solo work, he has also written songs for artists such as Gang 90 & Absurdettes, Elis Regina, Marina Lima and Maria Bethânia.
He had several hits during the 80s including: “Brincar de Viver”, "Meu Mundo e Nada Mais”, “Planeta Água" "Cheia de Charme”, "Coisas do Brasil” among many others. Most of his songs are written by him, and some in collaboration with other composers.
His songs have also achieved success in the voice of major Brazilian artists such as: Elis Regina, Caetano Veloso, Roberto Carlos, Cláudia Telles, Gang 90, Biafra, Ana Belém, Quarteto em Cy, Jessé, Cauby Peixoto, Belchior, Ney Matogrosso, Luiz Ayrão, Sandra Sá, MPB-4, Fafá de Belém, A Cor do Som, Vanusa, Zizi Possi, Joanna, Eliete Negreiros, Emílio Santiago, Barão Vermelho, Os Cariocas, 14 Bis, Flávio Venturini, Verônica Sabino, Ná Ozetti, Pena Branca & Xavantinho, Nenhum de Nós, Klébi, Chitãozinho e Xororó, Maria Bethânia, Leila Pinheiro, Sá & Guarabira, and others.
Arantes is stil a prolific artist - his 2017 album Flores & Cores (Flowers & Colors), was elected the 13th best Brazilian album of the year by the Brazilian edition of Rolling Stone.
In 2018 he composed a song for major Brazilian singer Gal Costa titled “Puro sangue” (Pure Blood) for her album “A Pele do Futuro” (“Future Skin”).
He keeps composing for soap operas, writing the pop song “Magia do Amor” for Globo’s soap “Verão 90” (Summer 90); and in December 2018 he released the single “Nossa Imensidão a Dois”.

Mas tinha, onde fosse, minha voz a sussurrar
Oh! Pegasus! Oh! Voa!
Oh!
"Pegasus!" "Pegasus!",
Me gritam "Pegasus!, Pegasus!, Pegasus!"
The lyrics of Guilherme Arantes's song Pégaso Azul chronicle the experiences of the singer over a span of twenty years. Throughout this time period, the singer has witnessed the people around him become increasingly distant and detached from one another. Despite this, the singer's voice persists, softly whispering for Pegasus to take flight. In doing so, the singer believes that fragments of life and drops of music will become palpable in the air. The silence of the hours, the very moments that have brought the singer no peace, are where the pleasure of things that fly can be found. These words of advice from the singer's inner voice make up the chorus of the song.
In the twenty years chronicled by the song, the singer has also watched as their parents have aged. They too are carrying the weight of the west in their hearts. The singer acknowledges that the experiences they have had to face are challenging and harsh, and yet they cling on to hope. The singer sees signs of progress as each day passes, even though they have not known peace for a single moment.
Pégaso Azul is ultimately a song of perseverance in the face of a world in turmoil. The lyrics suggest that, though times may be tough, we always have the potential to fly and soar above our problems. While the people around us may feel like strangers, we still have the power to rise above it all and find beauty even in the silence of our darkest moments.

Nesses 20 anos
During the last 20 years of my life,
Eu costumava abrir os olhos
I used to open my eyes
Everywhere I looked, people seemed strange to me.
Nesses 20 anos vi minha mãe e meu pai mais velhos,
In those 20 years, I have seen my parents grow older,
Carrying, like all of us, the essence of the west in their hearts
Mas tinha, onde fosse, minha voz a sussurrar
But wherever I went, my voice whispered within me
Oh! Pegasus! Oh! Voa!
Oh! Pegasus! Oh! Fly!
Oh!
Fly, because there are pieces of life and drops of music in the air
Fly, in the silence of the hours lies the pleasure of things that fly
E coisas que voam gritam "Pegasus!" "Pegasus!" "Pegasus!",
And things that fly scream "Pegasus!" "Pegasus!" "Pegasus!"
Me gritam "Pegasus!, Pegasus!, Pegasus!"
They scream to me "Pegasus!, Pegasus!, Pegasus!"
Nesses 20 anos, não tive paz nenhum momento
In these 20 years, I haven't had a moment of peace
But that's how it is for those who grow up in this environment
Nesses 20 anos, das partes cruas e amargas,
In these 20 years, from the raw and bitter parts,
Remain signs of being closer day by day.
Mas tinha onde fosse...(repete)
But wherever I went... (repeated)
