Serenade
Guy Lombardo & His Royal Canadians Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once I strayed beneath the window of a lovely señorita
And she smiled while I softly played my Penny Serenade

Si, si, si, you can hear it for a penny
Si, si, si, just a Penny Serenade

In her eyes shone the tender dawn of love and sweet surrender
As for me, in my heart I played a lover's serenade

Si, si, si, hear my love song for a penny
Si, si, si, just a Penny Serenade

For that night so divine she was mine, no word had been spoken
When I woke from my dream she was gone, my poor heart was broken

Still I pray that wherever she may be she will remember
In her heart she will always hear my Penny Serenade

Si, si, si, hear my love song for a penny
Si, si, si, just a Penny Serenade

Overall Meaning

In Guy Lombardo's song "Penny Serenade," the singer recounts a night where he stood beneath the window of a beautiful Spanish woman. He plays a soft serenade on his penny whistle, and the woman smiles down at him. As he looks up at her, he is struck by the tender hint of love and surrender in her eyes. In response, he plays a lover's serenade on his penny whistle, hoping to capture her heart. Despite never speaking any words, the night feels divinely perfect, until the singer wakes up from his dream and realizes that the woman has disappeared. The song ends on a bittersweet note, with the singer acknowledging that he will never see this woman again, but hoping that she will remember his penny serenade forever.

If you would prefer to listen to a decent quality digital recording of this same version of Penny Serenade by Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians, choose the one by the78prof in the You Tube search list. Unfortunately You Tube, like Face Book, does not weed out poor quality.

brenda f

volume too low

Lorren Lindevig

Turn it up...it's a knob on your speaker...lol

Yes the volume is low because the people who made the digital recording did not use a good quality system to transfer from an old record on an old worn out phonograph with a worn out needle. So turning up the volume just makes the sound worse and is an insult to the original artists who worked hard to produce a quality musical recording.

The music is great! Love it! BUT who ever made this poor quality digital recording makes it a disgrace to the original artists and wasting our time trying to listen. Unless you love to hear a digital recording of an old 78 rpm record playing on a worn out record player as the old needle scratches it’s way thru the worn out grooves in the old record. I have heard this same song, Penny Serenade, by Guy Lombardo and his band recorded by someone who values quality recording and will guarantee it is much better volume and tone without the extra noise from someone’s home. My 5 year old grandson loves it.
