Coquette
Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hear me, why you keep fooling
Little coquette, making fun of the one who loves you
Breaking hearts you are ruling
Little coquette, true hearts tenderly dreaming of you.
Someday you'll fall in love as I fell in love with you.
Maybe the one you love will just be fooling too.
And when you are alone with all your regrets,
You know, my little coquette, I love you.

Someday you'll fall in love as I fell in love with you.
Now, maybe the one you love will just be fooling too.

And when you are alone with all your regrets,
Now, you know, my little coquette, I love you.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians' song "Coquette" express the loving frustration of a man who is hopelessly in love with a woman who is toying with his heart. The singer addresses the woman, urging her to stop "fooling" him and "breaking hearts" because she is "ruling" over those who love her. He recognizes that she may eventually fall in love herself, and when that day comes, she will understand the pain and regret that come with toying with someone's heart.

The lyrics are a classic example of the "coquette" archetype, a woman who flirts and toys with men for her own amusement. However, the singer's tone is not bitter or angry, but rather filled with a tender sadness and longing. Despite the woman's behavior, he cannot help but love her and will continue to do so, even in the face of rejection and heartbreak.

Overall, "Coquette" is a bittersweet love song that captures the complexity of human emotions and relationships. It speaks to the universal experience of unrequited love, and the struggle to reconcile feelings of passion and vulnerability with the fear of rejection.

One of Carmen’s first hits.He really was an underrated composer.Of course I suppose Boo Hoo was his biggest hit but my personal favorite was Seems Like Old Times. What a great band! The passing of a wonderful era that I guess may never come again.Well, mayby in a hundred years or so.What a shame!
