Gyroscope Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here's what I think about you and how your friends
How your friends adore your sudden glory
Here?s what I know about you and all your trends
And all the times we made believe a story

Here?s what I think about making face
Without a grain of doubt it?s all I think about, it?s all in my mind
It?s best I make a sound before I hit the ground

Run away from it all
It?s what I think about, it?s what I know about, it?s what I care about

Pain won?t go away even when the drugs say, I won?t regret
Time heals so I?m told, I could never be sold, I don?t forget

And if I should start to wonder, pull me out from the rock I?m under

Here?s what I think about vacant space
Without a grain of doubt it?s all I think about, it?s all in my mind
I better hit the town before the rain comes down

Run away from it all
Far away from it all

Pain won?t go away even when the drugs say, I won?t regret
Time heals so I?m told, I could never be sold, I don?t forget
Hey Dave, you?re so brave, I can never be saved, take it from me
He said, she said, even if they?re not dead, bring them to me

Run away from it all, from it all

Pain won?t go away even if the drugs stay, I don?t regret
Time heals so I?m told, I could never be sold, I won?t forget.

I won?t forget.
I don?t forget.

Overall Meaning

The song "1981" by Gyroscope is a reflective track about someone's thoughts and feelings towards a person they know. The first verse discusses how the singer feels about this person's sudden rise to popularity among their friends. The second verse touches on the concept of wearing a façade or putting up a front, and how it's constantly on their mind. The chorus repeats the phrase "run away from it all" which could be interpreted as a desire to escape from these thoughts and emotions. The bridge acknowledges the struggles of pain, but also the healing power of time.

The second verse's mention of "vacant space" could refer to the empty feeling left behind when a façade is dropped. "Hit the town" in the same verse suggests a desire to distract oneself from these thoughts. The mention of "Dave" in the bridge could be a reference to someone who is trying to help the singer out of this negative headspace. The repeated phrase "Pain won't go away even when the drugs say, I won't regret" reinforces the idea that these emotions are not something that can be easily numbed or erased. The final repetition of "I won't forget" emphasizes the lasting impact of these feelings.

My mate was in a band (December 4th) they supported these guys at a secret gig just north of Perth at a pub, loved their sound and proud they are from WA, fun fact Mark Hoppus was scheduled to produce one of their Albums 'Are you involved' , they met with him but in the end he pulled out and Mark Trombino who produced Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American ended up producing the Album. Gyroscope are still aws and one of my favs from back in the day.
