Background
H.N.I.C. Lyrics

I could play the background
I could play the background
'Cause I know sometimes I get in the way
So won't You take the lead, lead, lead?
So won't You take the lead, lead, lead?
And I could play the background, background
And you could take the lead
It's evident you run the show, so let me back down
You take the leading role, and I'll play the background
I know I miss my cues, know I forget my lines
I'm sticking to your script, and I'm reading all your signs (Aye)
I don't need my name in lights, (Aye) I don't need a starring role
Why gain the whole wide world, If I'm just going lose my soul?
And my ways ain't purified, don't live according to Your Word
I can't endure this life without Your wisdom being heard
So word to every dancer for a pop star
'Cause we all play the background, but mine's a rockstar
Yeah, so if you need me I'll be stage right
Praying the whole world would start embracing stage fright
So let me fall back, stop giving my suggestions
'Cause when I follow my obsessions, I end up confessin'
That I'm not that impressive, matter of fact
I'm who I are, a trail of stardust leading to the superstar

I could play the background
I could play the background
'Cause I know sometimes I get in the way
So won't You take the lead, lead, lead?
So won't You take the lead, lead, lead?
And I could play the background, background
And you could take the lead

Yo, I had a dream that I was captain of my soul
I was master of my fate, lost control, and then I sank
So I don't want to take the lead, 'cause I'm prone to make mistakes
All these folks who follow me, goin' end up in the wrong place
So just let me shadow you, just let me trace your lines
Matter of fact, just take my pen, here, you create my rhymes
'Cause if I do this by myself, I'm scared that I'll succeed
And no longer trust in You, 'cause I only trust in me
And see, that's how you end up headed to destruction
Paving a road to nowhere, pour your life out for nothin'
You pulled my card, I'm bluffin', You know what's in my hand
Me, I just roll and trust you, You cause the dice to land
I'm in control of nothing, follow You at any cost
Some call it sovereign will, all I know is you the boss
And man, I'm so at ease, I'm so content
I'll play the background, like it's an instrument

I could play the background
I could play the background
'Cause I know sometimes I get in the way
So won't You take the lead, lead, lead?
So won't You take the lead, lead, lead?
And I could play the background, background
And you could take the lead

I know I'm safest when I'm in Your will, and trust Your Word
I know I'm dangerous when I trust myself, my vision blurred
And I ain't got no time to play life's foolish games
Got plenty aims, but do they really Glorify Your name?
And it's a shame, the way I want to do these things for You, yeet
Don't even cling to you, take time to sit and glean from You
It seems like You were patient in my ignorance
If ignorance is bliss, it's 'cause she never heard of this

I could play the background
I could play the background
'Cause I know sometimes I get in the way
So won't You take the lead, lead, lead?
So won't You take the lead, lead, lead?
And I could play the background, background
And you could take the lead

I could play the background
I could play the background
'Cause I know sometimes I get in the way
So won't You take the lead, lead, lead?
So won't You take the lead, lead, lead?

And I could play the background, background
And you could take the lead

My thoughts on each individual song:
FOX/Former FOX Sports Networks: This is a great song. It sounds like something you would hear in the arena itself with the heavy alternative rock sound.
ESPN: I've always loved epic orchestral sports themes, this being no exception. It's probably because I've watched a lot of NFL broadcasts over the years.
ABC: Like with ESPN, an epic orchestral theme and straight up my alley.
NBC/NBCSN: Love the fast pace of this one. Fits well with the sport.
TSN (former): TSN always had some good theme songs (this included), with particular shoutout going to the theme song for their international hockey broadcasts.
TSN (current): First of all, f*** you for taking this away from HNIC, Bell Media. Secondly, this version sounds pretty close to the version of the song used in the 1970s and 1980s.
CTV Sportsnet: This actually sounds really good, all things considered.
Rogers Sportsnet: Another one of those epic sounding orchestrated numbers that I like.
Hockey Night in Canada themes:
The Hockey Theme: Oh, hell yeah! Fellow Canadians, please rise for our unofficial national anthem. This is the greatest theme song in the history of sports. No other sports theme even compares.
Canadian Gold (original version): Not a big fan of this one, even in a vacuum. Not helped by the fact that it had to replace THE MOTHERF***ING HOCKEY THEME!
Secondary theme: Much better than the first version of Canadian Gold. I would've been fine if this was what replaced The Hockey Theme.
Canadian Gold (current version): For all of the shortcomings of Rogers following their takeover of HNIC, this is the one thing that definitely improved because of it. This version of Canadian Gold sounds almost nothing like the first version and completely blows that version out of the water.

12:03 has to come back. Always an empowering theme before a big game and still CBCish.

TSN 2 and HNIC on CBC are my favourites. Grew up listening to those every Saturday night on the weekends.

omg best theme ever 8:58-10:56 that must be captured and saved for eternity

That's the sound of Saturday nights in Canada my friend!

NHL on Fox theme is still epic after all these years. Despite the beating they took from many for introducing the glowing puck, the truth is that they popularized hockey back in the day and exposed it to the masses. All of a sudden all the kids in my school were talking hockey.

"Hockey elitists" hated it, but you're absolutely right. It made the casual viewer able to follow the puck easier and helped the game grow in the US especially in non traditional markets. This was at the time when Tampa, Florida, San Jose, Anaheim and, and others were joining the league. Many of the fans in those areas weren't super familiar with the greatest game ever played and things like this helped.

The sound of great moments coming up

The NHL sportsnet theme’s the best IMO! Very empowering 🤘🏻🤘🏻

Dept Roro

Agreed, the Wednesday hockey one they do is amazing

magicwanddd

The theme at 0:01 sounds so grunge you could only imagine that the ghost of Kurt Cobain visited the Fox Network studio to empower those disc jocks employed by Fox to be very creative in making that incredible sounding NHL theme song. Or maybe that theme song was the theme song of choice for Fox because it was played to be a battle cry at the time it was released to convince the NHL to expand the total number of teams participating in the NHL to 32 by granting the city of Seattle a brand spanking new hockey franchise. Go figure.
