Dagon
H. P. Lovecraft Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Bloodshed
Torture
For us

The hour of reckoning is drawing near
Prepare to kill your family
Man against man
This is the fate of our nature

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of H. P. Lovecraft's song "Dagon" evoke a sense of darkness, violence, and impending doom. The opening lines, "Bloodshed, Torture, For us," set a grim tone, hinting at themes of brutality and suffering that permeate the rest of the song.

As the lyrics progress, the imagery becomes increasingly intense and disturbing. The mention of a "hour of reckoning" approaching and the instruction to "Prepare to kill your family" suggest a stark choice between survival and morality. The idea of "Man against man" speaks to a brutal struggle for existence, where the primal instincts of survival override empathy and compassion.

The inclusion of Russian lyrics in the middle section adds a layer of cryptic mystique to the song. The references to "Раз два три четыре" (One two three four) and "Малиновый звон" (Raspberry ringing) create an unsettling atmosphere, enhanced by descriptions of infernal cries and sacrificial rituals. The mention of "посвящение в пидоры" (dedication to the sodomites) and "методом в концлагерях" (by the method in concentration camps) further underscores the themes of persecution and violence.

The closing verses of the song delve into darker territories, speaking of the cyclical nature of existence and the inevitability of destruction. The imagery of cutting one's own umbilical cord and being an outcast from a blind world hints at themes of isolation and self-destruction. The mention of "Шрамы бытия" (Scars of being) and "Геноцид человечества" (Genocide of humanity) paints a bleak picture of a world consumed by its own violent tendencies. The idea of a malevolent entity returning to incite global destruction adds a chilling final note to the song, leaving a sense of impending apocalypse and despair.

I love how H.P. Lovecraft's brand of horror is basically being like "you don't even wanna know half the shit I saw"

@Gadget-Walkmen You have just described my Canadian ex wife. lol

Alpheus

Lol wasn't there a story of like "a colour you've never seen"

RogertheGS

"I am using 11 adjectives to describe this thing, one of which is 'indescribable'"

Vogelweide

Sometimes its better to leave things to the imagination, especially when it comes to horror. What scares you is different of what scares me and id say each idea of a human like fish monster is also unique!

Ivan Espinal

@Gadget-Walkmen it was funny though 🤣

So, the man was lost at sea and wishes for land. Dagon decides to help him and gives him land. Then they man goes insane because he saw a deep one and leaves the rotten island. Dagon than precedes to send some deep ones to check on him every night, unknowingly driving him to suicide.

That's how I interpreted it anyways.

@Daegog The Wyrdmake Depends on if you interpret Dagon as a Deep One or a Great Old One. If it's the first, than yeah, he'd mingle with humans if the others of his kind are anything to go off of.

Man gets a glimpse of what inspired the legend of Dagon. It leaves him permanently traumatized and paranoid, to the pony it drives him to suicide.

Dagon did give lots of fish to his followers in Innsmouth
