Carmen
HPK - Voittopelin jälkeen - Georges Bizet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle" from Georges Bizet's opera Carmen are a beautiful and complex exploration of love as an elusive, unpredictable force that cannot be tamed or controlled. The opening lines describe love as a rebellious bird that no one can tame, and that will refuse to answer even if called upon. The singer notes that they prefer the silent love interest who has said nothing, but still captivates them. The idea here is that love cannot be forced or demanded, but must be allowed to develop naturally.

The second verse expands on this idea, describing love as a Bohemian child that has known no law. The singer tells their love interest that even if they do not reciprocate their feelings, they will still love them. However, they issue a warning to "take care" if the love is returned, because it is a powerful force that can be dangerous. They repeat this warning in the final lines, describing how love can appear and disappear quickly, and seemingly be within reach yet always slipping away. The overall message is that love is wild and unpredictable, and must be respected and approached with caution.

For all the English people, in the French chorus, they say:
"Et c'est comme ça qu'on s'aime, s'aime, s'aime"
And that's how we love, love, love
That's how we buy, buy, buy.
But Stromae is so a genius that, in French the "That's how we buy" the "buy" that is "consomme" in French, the last two syllables ("somme") continues to echoes, and "somme" also means "are". So in the original chorus, with the auditory illusion, it sounds like:
So basically, "that's how we are"
Sorry if it's bad written, I'm not the best at English.
