Too Late
Halacg Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The Undercity shaped and made me me (Me)
Your pity is worthless in these streets
The poorest rotting at your feet
And all the richest powers pretending that they don′t see
While they sit and people please the masses from their shiny seats
It's cheap, I mean
They sic their soldiers on the weak but topsiders don′t scare me
Living here teaches you to be your own military
They wouldn't last a day without their fancier armor
Hidden from karma, chasin' children and the kids are still foster, imagine
There are monsters in the shadows that they cast
And I′ll shatter every one of them, none matter to my brass
Yeah, you bet I′ll bring her right back from the well she thinks she passed
Being each other's family doesn′t have to be the past
We'll last, we′re us

Is it too late to salvage what we were?
Too late for me to be your sister?

Is it too late? (Late, late, late)
Is it too late? (Late, late, late)
Can't we salvage what we were?
Let me be your big sister?
And you know just how I missed you
I hope it′s not too late, ooh

They step like they're not 'bout to get hurt
I′ve come to get her, couldn′t protect her
Runnin' past stalls in the city they let burn
I know the monster you mentioned, it′s temper
Fuck me, I shouldn't have left her, should′ve stayed centered
Kept her away from the shitty protector, remember
He got 'em killed then, it wasn′t you who forced war onto children
Listen, I'll change it all up
Take down monopolists thinkin' they′re tough
Bring down the hammer and punch ′em enough
You'd be surprised just how quickly they′re done in
Won't run when you′re gunnin' ′cause family's rough
I'd fucking die if I had to for us
Yes, things are different, we′re not from above
We don′t stay scar-free with what we grew up in, but that makes us something
Like all the second-rate citizens down here, in the dark
No fear, let 'em bark, who cares?
We could go anywhere as a start, no longer apart
Just us, you can trust in me

Is it too late to salvage what we were?
Too late for me to be your sister, ooh?

Is it too late? (Late, late, late)
Is it too late? (Late, late, late)
Can′t we salvage what we were?
Let me be your big sister?
And you know just how I missed you
I hope it's not too late

I′m sorry I wasn't there to keep you safe
Family broke down and the pain
Changed us both in different ways
But I′m fighting and I'm stronger
I'm here to stay even if you force me away
No matter what I have to do
Trust that I′ll love you the same

Is it too late? (Late, late, late)
Is it too late? (Late, late, late)
Can′t we salvage what we were?
Let me be your big sister?
And you know just how I missed you
I hope it's not too late (Late, late, late)

Is it too late? (Late, late, late)

Overall Meaning

In "Too Late," Halacg describes the struggle of living in the Undercity and the hardships that come with it. The Undercity has molded and shaped Halacg into the person they are, and they express that they do not need the pity of those who live in the topside world. The poorest people in the Undercity are often ignored by the rich and powerful, who pretend not to see them. Halacg understands this and has learned to rely on themselves and be their own military. They have also come to learn that family does not have to be biological and that they are willing to do anything for those they love.

The second part of the song is directed at Halacg's sister, whom they have not seen in a while. Halacg wants to salvage their relationship and make up for not being there for her in the past. They acknowledge that family can break down and lead to pain and changes, but they are fighting and stronger now. Halacg reassures their sister that they will always love her and be there for her, no matter what.

Overall, "Too Late" is a powerful song about the struggles of living in poverty and the importance of family and love.

Hala. I just. What is there to say? The chorus is just perfect. Hits all the right places of my heart. And the flows of the verses are phenomenal. Again, you’ve grown so much from when I found you 4 years ago and you keep getting better and better. Keep doing what you’re doing. Love ya girl

Plus now that I binge watched Arcane last week, I get these bars XD

You really are getting better with each track you release; like... wow. This was incredible; the contrast between the verses and chorus really matched up with the character and their dilemma, and the bridge softening up to more match up with the chorus was just the icing on the cake. What's more is that your vocals and bars worked so well with the instrumental wherever they were - you always find your flow, Hala, and it's a great one! One more thing is that I love how this song seems to use some of the same instruments as "Don't Remember Me", the perfect way to tie up the "sisters" theme. Amazing work as always, Hala; wonderful job!
