Look At Me
Halliwell Geri Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Good looking, bad tasting
Full bodied, butt wasting
Loose living, tight fitting
What you see ain't what you are getting
Big make-up, little break-up
She wants it, he's got it
Cold blooded, hot gossip
Superficial expectations

Look at me
You can take it all because this face is free
Maybe next time use your eyes and look at me
I'm a drama queen if that's your thing baby
I can even do reality
Uh, uh, uh, uh

Fake honey, real plastic
Stupid cupid, fantastic
Queer thinking, straight talking
What you see ain't what you are getting
Fast loving, slow moving
No rhythm, but I'm grooving
Old feeling, new beginning
Superficial expectations

Look at me
You can take it all because this face is free
Maybe next time use your eyes and look at me
I'm a drama queen if that's your thing baby
I can even do reality
That's me

Sometimes I don't recognize my own face
I look inside my eyes and find disgrace
My little white lies tell a story
I see it all, it has no glory
Huh

Look at me
You can take it all because this face is free
Maybe next time use your eyes and look at me
I'm a drama queen if that's your thing baby
I can even do reality

Come and look at me
This face is free
I'm your fantasy
So Who'd you wannabe?
Not what you see
I'm a drama queen
If that's your thing
Come on and look at me
I'm your fantasy
This face is free (face is free)
Come on and look at me
So who'd you wannabe? (Look at me)
This face is free
Come on and look at me (thing baby)
I'm your fantasy
Come on and look at me (look at me)
Not what you see
I'm a drama queen (face is free)
If that's your thing
Come on and look at me (look at me)

So who'd you wannabe?
This face is free

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Geri Halliwell's song "Look at Me" explore themes of self-perception, superficiality, and the desire for validation. The song is a statement about how society often judges people based on their appearance and puts unrealistic expectations on them. Halliwell sings about the contradiction between her outward appearance and her true self, emphasizing that what you see on the surface is not always an accurate reflection of who someone truly is.

The lyrics use contrasting imagery to highlight the discrepancy between appearance and reality. Halliwell describes herself as "good looking, bad tasting" and "full bodied, butt wasting," suggesting that there is more to her than meets the eye. She also references "fake honey, real plastic" and "stupid cupid, fantastic," further underscoring the theme of superficiality and the idea that things are not always as they seem.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the importance of looking beyond the surface and truly seeing someone for who they are. Halliwell encourages others to "look at me" and not just rely on superficial judgments. She admits to being a "drama queen" and capable of playing various roles, including reality TV. Through these lyrics, she challenges the listener to question their own assumptions and prejudices based on appearances.

Overall, "Look at Me" is a commentary on the superficial expectations of society and the need for acceptance and understanding beyond physical appearances.

@lune78

This was such a huge deal at the time. Geri's comeback was probably the most anticipated music event of the year.

@thedana89

Geri has always had such a profound understanding of pop culture history, the fashion, the references are so on point… even in her ginger spice days her outfits may have sometimes been tacky but always with a wink, and her appreciation for old Hollywood is always on brand

@beardedbaldie2698

That’s why Geri was the key member of the Spice Girls. She may not be vocally talented, or the best dancer, but she has charisma, creativity and drive. Without her, the ‘spice’ was gone.

@anna.bel0

It's fascinating to think that this song was written before social media and still rings so true today
