Monument
Hallows Eve Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Our great monument to nothing
This glory, this sweat, this play
Makes no difference what we say
For every man stands a ghost
For every ghost stands a star
For every star stands a thought
If God is the personification
Of the total of man's thought
Then I must be the reflection
Of all you have fought
This era, this music, this scene
Our great monument to nothing
This glory, this sweat, this play
Makes no difference what we say
Look into a place that you dare not look
You'll find me staring back at you
A perfect reflection, your mirror
Your representative, I am you
Here we stand all as one
Nothing said as we are done
But no matter what we do
We're together, me and you
The lyrics to Hallows Eve's song "Monument" speak to the idea of legacy and the ephemeral nature of life. The era, music, and scene that the band finds themselves in is a monument to nothing - it will eventually pass away and be forgotten. However, the physical manifestations of this scene - the sweat, the music, the play - are what endures beyond death. The idea that every person has a ghost, and every ghost has a star, and every star has a thought speaks to the interconnected nature of existence. All thoughts and experiences accumulate somewhere, and perhaps that accumulative force is what defines God. The singer of the song sees themselves as a reflection of all that has been fought for before them, the culmination of past experiences and ideas.
The lines "Look into a place that you dare not look / You'll find me staring back at you / A perfect reflection, your mirror / Your representative, I am you" speak to the idea that we are all connected on a deep level. The band and fans are all in this together, as they stand as one. The fact that nothing is said as they are done highlights the idea that words do not hold as much weight as actions. No matter what they do, they are connected in the shared experience of being a part of this scene.
Overall, the lyrics to "Monument" express the transience of life and the importance of the experiences that endure beyond death. The interconnected nature of existence is highlighted, with the idea that we are all reflections of each other.

I remember the day I bought the album.
I asked my mom for money, and I went to a local metal store and asked for Whiplash's power and pain. The guy there told me that he dosen't haave it, so I looked around the shop, and found this. Bought it because I had heard tales of terorr before, never regretted it! Kick ass album!
