Honest Mistake
Handsome Ghost Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No sound, cool air
Feel the first light find my way
To your house, up the stairs
Here to meet my judgment day

I should have been there when you called for me
From your third floor Greenpoint balcony
I′m a little bit older baby
I'm a little bit wiser lately
It was an honest mistake
It was an honest mistake
Come a little bit closer to me
I′m seeing it differently
It was an honest mistake
It was an honest mistake

It was an honest mistake

Summer passed, fade to fall
I'm a tourist in your town
Photographs, on your wall
Oh the life that you have now

I should have been there when you called for me
From your third floor Greenpoint balcony

I'm a little bit older baby
I′m a little bit wiser lately
It was an honest mistake
It was an honest mistake
Come a little bit closer to me
I′m seeing it differently
It was an honest mistake
It was an honest mistake

It was an honest mistake

So all that was and all that could have been
I lost you once but I'm not giving in

I′m a little bit older baby
I'm a little bit wiser lately
It was an honest mistake
It was an honest mistake
Come a little bit closer to me
I′m seeing it differently
It was an honest mistake
It was an honest mistake

It was an honest mistake

It was an honest mistake

Overall Meaning

The Handsome Ghost’s song, “Honest Mistake,” tells the story of the singer’s regret and sorrow over a past relationship or friendship that he lost, as well as his realization of the mistakes he made in the past. The singer describes the moment he heads towards his old flame’s house, feeling the cool air and first light guiding his journey. He then realizes he's there to meet his judgment day. He admits that he should have been there for the person when they called for him from their third floor Greenpoint balcony in the past, but he wasn't. The person has now moved on, and he recognizes he made an honest mistake.

In the second stanza, he speaks of being a tourist in his old flame's town, viewing the pictures of their new life on their wall. He realizes that he missed out on being there for a crucial moment when they needed him most. Much time has passed, and the singer acknowledges that he lost the person once but is not going to give up on them. In the last stanza, he declares that he's a little bit older and wiser and now sees the things he could have done differently. He recognizes that he made an honest mistake and is hopeful that the person will come closer to him, and that he can make things right again.
