The Dipsy Doodle
Hank Levine And His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The dipsy doodle is the thing to beware
The dipsy doodle will get in your hair
And if it gets you, it couldn't be worse
The things you say will come out in reverse
Like "You love I and me love you!"
That's the way the dipsy doodle works.
You can't eat, you can't sleep. You go crazy.
You're just a victim of the dipsy doodle
And it's not your mind that's hazy
It's your heart that's at fault - not your noodle.
You better listen and try to be good
And try to do all the things that you should
The dipsy doodle will get you some day
And when it gets you the things you will say

Like the moon jumped over the cow - hey diddle!
That's the way the dipsy doodle works.

Overall Meaning

The song ‘The Dipsy Doodle’ by Hank Levine And His Orchestra is a playful and catchy tune with lyrics that express the dangers of falling victim to the dipsy doodle. The song uses the dipsy doodle as a metaphor for the heart taking over the mind when one is infatuated with someone. The dipsy doodle is a feeling that can derail one’s usual behavior and make them say and do things that they would not normally do. The lyrics warn that one should be wary of the dipsy doodle because if it gets you, there is no escaping its effects.

The lyrics describe the effects of the dipsy doodle as causing the things you say to come out in reverse, making you unable to eat or sleep, and ultimately driving you crazy. It is not your mind that becomes hazy but your heart, which the song suggests is at fault. The only solution presented by the lyrics is to listen and try to be good, and do all the things that one should. The dipsy doodle is presented as a danger that everyone will face someday, and that when it does get you, you will say and do things that make no sense, like “the moon jumped over the cow - hey diddle”.

Overall, ‘The Dipsy Doodle’ is a light-hearted and fun song that uses a metaphor to explore the effects of infatuation.

this song is about as unique as a fingerprint. I was a freshman in high school when Local Herb Kent would play this. I knew it had a sophistication 13 year olds could not relate to then. I heard it again by the late Richard Pogue about 1983. At this point thank you poster for being so sharp. I have it back!
