Hang On
Hank Williams III & The Melvins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I'm cruisin' all alone,
Just a singing my poor song

I've seen them hard hard times,
But that's my kind of life

I like it most the time,
When I'm drunk and feeling high

Sometimes it gets me down,
Makes me feel I'm unwound

And I know, its hard
When you're all alone
And you don't wanna live
And you've got that gun

Hang on
Hang on
Hang on
Hang on

Well I'm cruisin' all alone,
Just a singing my poor song

I've seen them hard hard times,
But that's my kind of life

I like it most the time,
When I'm drunk and feeling high

Sometimes it gets me down,
Makes me feel I'm unwound

Hang on
Hang on

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Hank Williams III's "Hang On" depict a narrator who is struggling with life but has learned to find solace in singing their "poor song." They have been through hard times and live a rough lifestyle, but embrace the highs that come with it. However, even with these highs, sometimes the singer feels down and unwound. The chorus "hang on" is repeated throughout as a message of encouragement to keep on going despite the struggles and hardships of life. The final verse emphasizes the loneliness the singer experiences and the temptation to give up, but the chorus remains a reminder to persevere.

This is almost haunting. He looks and sounds so much like his granddaddy. It’s a beautiful thing.

Read an article about the first time Minnie Pearl met him. She almost stroked out she thought it was Hank Sr at first.

@San Patricio I think you should leave.

Hank 3. Is so much better than that bearded embarrassment of a son Jr turned out to be.

@Faramund es he does

Haunting? It fills me with warmth! I know for Hank Jr. standing in the shadow of his grandfather was a pain, mainly because his mother forced him to imitate his father.
But for Hank III it's really a choice, he's free to play his grandfathers songs, and also free not to. But man he sure does do them justice!

He looks so much more like Hank Sr. than his dad. He sure does the song a lot of justice also. Great performance.

@Cheryl Adams glad someone else besides me knows that

Jr looked a whole lot like his Daddy, b4 he fell off a Mountain side. We know Jr. and his looks post that. ... Hank didn't want to sing his Daddy's music. Although he loved it. He wanted to b his own person, not a shadow. He had to but heads with his momma over it. Hank 3 sounds and looks like his Granddad.
