Falling Slowly
Hansard and Irglová Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react
And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out, oh

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You'll make it now

Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
And moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
Well, you have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You've made it now

Falling slowly, sing your melody
I'll sing along, oh, oh, oh

Take it all

I played the cards too late
Now you're gone

Overall Meaning

The song "Falling Slowly" by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová tells a story of a person who sees someone they don't know but feels drawn to them. The lyrics communicate the person's desire to get to know this other person better, even though they struggle to find the right words to say. At the same time, the person acknowledges that past experiences have taught them not to get their hopes up about potential relationships that may never go anywhere.

The chorus of the song serves as a plea for the person to take action and not give up hope. The imagery of a sinking boat is used to represent the feeling of being lost or stuck, and the message is that it's not too late to turn things around. They have a choice and can still make something of their situation. The second verse suggests that this person has gone through some difficult times and has been hard on themselves, but it's time for them to be kinder to themselves and to give themselves a chance at happiness.

In the end, the song seems to acknowledge that taking a chance on love can be risky and that we can learn a lot from past experiences. However, the overall message seems to be one of hope and perseverance, even in the face of uncertainty.

(with Markéta Irglová)
(from "Once" soundtrack)

I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that

Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react

And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out

[Chorus:]
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You'll make it now

Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back

Moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black

You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won

[Chorus:]
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You've made it now

Falling slowly sing your melody
I'll sing it loud

Everyone who was part of this movie should be proud for the rest of their lives: an irish independent production with a small budget of a few thousand dollars conquered the world, and this song ended up winning an Oscar. That's absolutely incredible. It is still one of my favorite movies, it's raw, it's real.. I couldn't ask for anything more.
