Mmm Bop
Hanson Lyrics

Oh oh oh oh oh
Yeah

You have so many relationships in this life
Only one or two will last
You go through all the pain and strife
Then you turn your back and they're gone so fast
Oh yeah
And they're gone so fast, yeah
Oh
So hold on the ones who really care
In the end they'll be the only ones there
And when you get old and start losing your hair
Can you tell me who will still care
Can you tell me who will still care?
Oh, oh care

Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du, yeah
Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba du dop
Ba du bop, ba du dop
Ba du, yeah

Said oh yeah
In an mmmbop they're gone
Yeah, yeah

Plant a seed, plant a flower, plant a rose
You can plant any one of those
Keep planting to find out which one grows
It's a secret no one knows
It's a secret no one knows
Oh, no one knows

Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du, yeah
Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba du dop
Ba du bop, ba du dop
Ba du, yeah

In an mmmbop they're gone
In an mmmbop they're not there
In an mmmbop they're gone
In an mmmbop they're not there
Until you lose your hair
Oh
But you don't care, yeah

Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du, yeah
Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba du dop
Ba du bop, ba du dop
Ba du, yeah

Can you tell me? Oh
No, you can't 'cause you don't know
Can you tell me? Oh yeah
You say you can but you don't know
Can you tell me? Oh (which flower's going to grow?)
No, you can't 'cause you don't know
Can you tell me? (if it's going to be a daisy or a rose?)
You say you can but you don't know
Can you tell me? Oh (which flower's going to grow?)
No, you can't 'cause you don't know
Can you tell me?
You say you can but you don't know
You say you can but you don't know
You don't know
You don't know, oh

Mmmbop, duba
Du bop, du
Yeah, yeah
Mmmbop (oh yeah), duba
Du bop, du
Oh yeah

Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du, yeah
Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba du dop
Ba du bop, ba du dop
Ba du, yeah

Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du, yeah
Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba du dop
Ba du bop, ba du dop
Ba du, oh yeah

Can you tell me? Oh
No, you can't 'cause you don't know
Can you tell me?

You say you can but you don't know
Say you can but you don't know, don't

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mmm Bop by Hanson seem to be about the transience of relationships in life. The song suggests that while we have many relationships throughout our lives, only a few of them will last. After going through the pain and struggle of trying to maintain relationships, people often turn their backs on us and disappear. The song advises the listener to hold onto the ones who truly care, as they will be the only ones left when we get old and lose our hair.

The lyrics also speak of planting seeds and flowers, but nobody knows which flowers will grow. The metaphor seems to suggest that relationships are like flowers, unpredictable and uncertain. Despite not knowing which flowers will grow, we keep planting them in search of the one that will. However, ultimately, we don't know which relationships will endure and which will fade away like an "Mmm Bop" and disappear quickly.

Keeping at it and persevering through the challenges is the only way to find out which relationships will stand the test of time.

It's a secret no one knows

The repetition of the chorus underscores the song's central message that relationships can disappear as quickly as they arrive.

In an mmmbop they're not there
As quickly as relationships emerge, they can just as quickly fade away.

Until you lose your hair
This image of losing hair serves as a metaphor for aging and the passage of time, a reminder to cherish our relationships while we have them.

But you don't care, yeah
Despite the inevitability of loss and change, the singer encourages us to continue to care and invest in our relationships as if nothing else mattered.

Can you tell me? Oh
In this refrain, the singer challenges us to consider whether we truly know which relationships will last and which ones will not.

No, you can't 'cause you don't know
Only time will tell which relationships will stand the test of time, and the uncertainty of this process is something that cannot be fully understood or controlled.

You say you can but you don't know
The repetition of this line emphasizes the limitations of our understanding and highlights the importance of valuing relationships while we have them.

Say you can but you don't know, don't
The song concludes with a repetition of the idea that we cannot truly know which relationships will last and which ones will not, underlining the central message of the song: life is transient and unpredictable, and all we can do is cherish the people we have while we have them.

Pacts with the Devil are a common thread running through Rock Music. With Pagey going so far as to buy Mr Crowley's mansion so he could fully connect with the Source. Which is why he plays a 'Source'erer in TSRtS.

But I myself would go so far as to assert that even Satan himself has his limits. You'd have to do unspeakable things to young children to infuse them with this much wisdom at their prepubescent age.

So yes, I was being quite serious.
Kinda like how Marie Osmond sang about those Paper Roses at age 12.
What does a 12 year old know about romantic love, let alone seeing through a facade to call out 'imitation love'.

My best guess is that both she and them had someone penning the words for them.
And I severely doubt that any young child would choose the Pick of Destiny route. Even Pagey was quite innocent when he was Hanson's age. You can see this when he appeared on the Huw Weldon show at age 13, and the host asked him what he wanted to do with his life. Jimmy's answer? He said he wanted to be a biological researcher so that he could find a cure for cancer.

Countless millions have since died of cancer. But we got Led Zeppelin instead. I'd say that was a fair trade. Heh.

If you realise that they were 11, 13 and 16 years old when this song came out, it's obvious that they were way ahead of their time and super creative.

@samueljohnson2465

And they started writing it at an even younger age.

Real talent

If you're an actual musician and you watch this now, it's very clear that they weren't the musicians playing the music on this song.
