Teach Your Children
Hanson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good-bye

Teach your children well
Their father's hell
Will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The one they pick
The one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why
If they told you, you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you
And know they love you.

And you, of tender years
Don't know the fears
That your elders grew by
So please help them with your youth
They seek the truth
Before they can die.

(Can you hear and do you care
And can't you see we must be free
To teach our children what you believe in
Make a world that we can believe in.)

Teach your parents well
Their children's hell
Will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The one they pick
The one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why
If they told you, you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you

And know thay love you
And know thay love you.

Overall Meaning

The song "Teach Your Children" by Hanson is a classic folk-inspired tune that emphasizes the importance of passing on knowledge and wisdom from generation to generation. The lyrics make it clear that life is full of challenges, but we must arm ourselves with a moral code to live by, developing a strong sense of self in the process. The past is unchangeable; we can only look forward and move on. The song then exhorts parents to teach their children well the values that will lead them to a brighter future.

The lyrics suggest that fathers may have had to endure much hardship in the past. If they fail to pass on their wisdom, their children may repeat their mistakes, continuing the cycle of despair. Instead, they should share their dreams with their children, allowing them to choose a path that resonates with their spirit. They should also never question the choices their children make, choosing to love them unconditionally instead.

In the second verse, the song addresses the younger generation. The youth, being inexperienced, may not always understand the trials and tribulations that their elders have undergone. Therefore, it's essential to help them while they can, and together, they can seek the truth before it's too late.

In conclusion, the song is a call to action, asking that we teach each other well the lessons that we have learned in life. It's a timeless message that speaks to the importance of communication, understanding, and, above all, love.

I donโ€™t know if anyone will care what I have to say butโ€ฆwhen I was 7 this song was being played on the radio and I loved it so much. My big sister, who was in high school was a fan of it, as well as my mother who was in her late 40s. And I remember thinking how cool it was that 3 different generations all loved this song. It has always put tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat. Fast forwardโ€ฆI am 58 now, and was reading an article about David Crosby passing. In the article I see a tweet from Hanson that mentioned this song and I immediately do a search because when my kids were little they liked Hanson, and so did I. I have never heard anyone do this song aside from C S & N. Beautiful job, guys. โค

I'm 63, and I didn't hear the song until I was around 10, and that was because my parents never had anything current they listened to on mom's radio in the kitchen. After I had found stations that played current music, I knew I wanted a Transistor Radio, and for my birthday, I got it. It was then that I began to find awesome music that for me was the best stuff on the radio. That was before things such as "oldies" were played. I began to feel very old a couple of days ago while listening to favorite songs on the radio in the car. The 70's were considered "oldies" for awhile, but a couple of days ago as they played music from the 80's was "classic rock". You get beyond the 90's and a lot of "current" music truly sucks ass. We have 2 sons, both are in their early 30's, and they will still go to stations that play music from the 70's and 80's. They had grown up listening to it when we took road trips, either to grandpa and grandma's or shopping in one of several malls, all within 20-70 miles from home. To this day, they still love a good share of that music that we all sang along to in the years before they were born. The easiest I find current music that I like is from auditions on American Idol or AGT, sometimes XF or Britain's got talent. Once I hear part of a song that I like, I find the original on You Tube, and if it's there, I'm off to iTunes to download the song(s) that I liked that are newer music. Most of it sucks, but then there comes a real gem that I love. I have an ipod that out of 32GB, it has only 4 GB of free space still. I have over 2,200 songs on it. Sure beats taking a bag full of CD's to work every day. I don't work anymore, and my stress level has come down so far.

This reminds me of something Barry Gibb said: even though his brothers have been gone a long time, he can still smell their breath because of how often they sang around one microphone.

@ProudNonni

There is nothing more beautiful than the sound of brotherly (or sisterly) voices harmonizing. Because of the relationship to one another, the tones you create are just breathtaking
