99 Red Balloons
Happy Hardcore Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You and I in a little toy shop,
Buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got,
Set them free at the break of dawn, one by one they have gone,
Back at base, back to the subway,
Flash the message someones out there,
Floatin' in the Summer sky, 99 Red Ballons go by.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Happy Hardcore's song "99 Red Balloons" describe two people purchasing a bag of balloons and setting them free at dawn. The imagery of a "little toy shop" and the limited amount of money the pair have to spend on the balloons evoke a sense of childhood innocence and playfulness, suggesting that the act of releasing the balloons is a spontaneous, joyful moment. However, the second half of the verse takes on a more ominous tone - the balloons float away, the pair head "back to base, back to the subway," and a message is flashed indicating that "someone's out there." The final line of the verse, "99 Red Balloons go by," implies that these innocent objects have taken on a more sinister significance - perhaps they are being used as a signal or a threat.

The song's chorus elaborates on this idea, suggesting that the 99 balloons have been mistaken for UFOs and have triggered a military response. The lyrics describe pilots scrambling to confront the balloons, only to realize their mistake too late. The repeated refrain of "Ninety-nine red balloons / Floating in the summer sky / Panic lads, it's a red alert / There's something here from somewhere else" underscores the confusion and fear that the balloons have caused, but also highlights the absurdity of a military response to such an innocuous phenomenon.

Overall, "99 Red Balloons" could be interpreted as a commentary on the paranoia and fear that characterized the era in which it was written (the late Cold War period of the 1980s). The balloons represent a simple, harmless object that is mistaken for something more terrifying due to the prevailing climate of mistrust and suspicion. The song's upbeat, danceable sound contrasts with the darker, thought-provoking lyrics, making it a quintessential example of the Happy Hardcore genre.

Flash the message, "Someone's out there"

99 red balloons floating in the summer sky
Panic bells! it's red alert!
There's something here from somewhere else
The war machine it springs to life
Opens up one eager eye
Focusing it on the sky as 99 red balloons go by

To worry, worry, super scurry
Call out the troops now in a hurry

The piano sounds of this song and other at happy hardcore raves, was bliss in 1990s.

Happy hardcore was our version of classical music, the ups and downs, and it was amazing, with the strobe lights buzzing in your eyes, and you had no idea about anything in this but that moment.

Makes me laugh you people today changed the name of this music to dubstep or what ever.

Its not the same as 1990s happy hardcore.

Happy hardcore really summed up that music, and what it was like.

This is one of the first songs I ever downloaded (entirely by chance) off of Limewire back in like 2005 or 2006. It was one of, if not, the first electronic song I had in my possession. I can't believe I found this version again after all these years.
