For clarity of everybody watching this, do not confuse floaters with those little translucent dots moving in random directions when you look at the blue sky. This is called the "Blue field entoptic phenomenon" and is a normal condition of the eye caused by white cells moving with the blood stream in front on the retina. Everybody experiences this.

Floaters, on the other hand, are an abnormal condition of the eye with very different causes, as the video explained.

Four years ago I did a Vitrectomy to replace the gel inside my eyeball. There was so many floaties that they interfered with my vision a lot. Since the vitrectomy I see everything crystal clear. It is a painless and quick procedure. But I had a black eye for about three weeks.

I had floaters for most of the days of my childhood it seemed. My sister and I learned to 'control' them by not following them directly with our eyes and instead seeing them from our peripheral visions. That childhood discovery also helped me to cope in situations mentally / emotionally by just being and noticing rather than by always seeking, grasping, and reacting. Strangely, I almost never notice floaters as an adult.

Haven’t met someone who doesn’t see floaters. I guarantee everyone has them to varying degrees, but not everyone notices or acknowledges them. The same applies to visual snow. Fatigue and stress have an effect on their intensity.

Yeah, wish I knew that before my major panic attack thinking I was going blind... I've had floaters since I was a teenager so you don't necessarily get them because of aging, could be something in my diet or environment but man, that first time seeing them was scary for me. Another one is when I was looking up at the bright sky and seeing my blood flowing through my eye was another one that freaked me out. It's hard to describe if you've never noticed it but its like looking at a sky colored bowl of slightly transparent tiny worms going in all directions in tiny arcs and pulsing with your heart beat, I've had a lot of body related panic attacks in my life to the point I think I'm part chihuahua

@Mikej1592 Mike, I can empathize. I started having floaters and visual snow in 6th grade and was convinced I was going blind. The ophthalmologist I saw said it was nothing and really did not explain what it was. I was not reassured and it was not until my teens that I really understood what was going on. Floaters exacerbate and improve in cycles. After a noticeably bad exacerbation, I saw another ophthalmologist. This new ophthalmologist took the time to explain what was going on and why it was not particularly concerning. So much of my childhood anxiety could have been relieved if the first doctor would have simply done his job better.

@Mikej1592 haha ive seen the same, these days i mostly see it with certain sun light, it sucks to have it i get a nasty feeling over my body when i can see my heart pound trough my eyes, even sometimes had cramps in my eyes that hurt like hell but mostly felt nasty, seeing floaters is not that bad and doesnt give me a nasty feeling anymore it became normal, certain light makes the floaters very visible, next to that i also see stars when i exercise alot or are extremely angry, also sometimes the light flashes that can be a bit of a shock at night its like seeing a ghost but now i know its just a fata morgana

As someone who's had multiple retinal detachments, the visual here of the 'shade' or 'curtain' is actually really accurate! In my experience, it can be semi-translucent and move with eye motion, like an oil spill on water. My vision also absolutely tanked even outside of that. If you get it checked out quick enough, it can absolutely be fixed!

EDIT: Another thing, this was so long ago I don't remember but apparently I mentioned seeing "cheerios", or blood platelets. If anyone's feeling a bit hypochondriac after this video, the kind of floaters in this case are best described as a sudden 'shower', not just one or two.

I remember my very first dark spot at age 19, followed by the clear wormy looking thing, it seemed like they all came on quickly. The most detailed cluster is like, I would call it a little tiny dot with a circle around it. I've had those float around all my life. But never a darker permanent multiple line of them. I spent a few days panicking thinking I was going blind or something.. But after educating myself on eye floaters, I pretty much adapted to the new normal quickly knowing it's no threat to my overall vision.. Now at 44 there isn't any anywhere in my line of sight where there is a void of eye floaters. my eyes are full of them, not to mention im getting near sighted now. And I'm like, meh..

Nice summary. A sudden onset of flashes or floaters, "cobwebs" or shadows, could be from a torn retina - which is a medical emergency that may require retinal surgery by a retinologist (an ophthalmologist specializing in the retina) to prevent the detachment from becoming permanent, resulting in partial or complete loss of vision in that eye.

Martha fear not!! I know at a young age they worry you. I was the same as you when i was 17 (i am 60 now). they are not a threat to your eyesight and you will eventually learn to ignore them as you get older. they are just annoying little buggers but not sinister. Fear not, you will go on to have a great life and your floaters will never cause you to lose your eyesight. please try not to get stressed over them.

As a photographer experience, i can truly say:
Floaters visible during bright conditions only due to a smaller pupil size, which decreasing it's size in the same way as aperture ring of any DSLR lens. It extens focal distance like if an aperture goes for f1.8 to f11. "Closed" way.
During night - you can't see it, cause of big pupil size, which works at "open" state, like f1.8, so everywhting from nearest focusing point to a focal point get very blur, and can't cast any shadows.
Also, you could "simulate" the vision effect, all you need to do is wathcing against something brighter, like your window, try to close squint your eyes to a very dark image, almost close them, and viola! You got this!
Working this method from around childhood to a present time, also having a stable miopia for last 15 years, lol.

100% right, everytime I'm tired/stressed or my eyes are strained the floaters tend to worsen and appear. I'm 25 aswell and I seemed to have gotten mine in my right eye 2/3years ago one day while working outside.
Staying hydrated really helps, also having to concentrate/focus on other things/tasks can lessen the visibility iv found aswell.
Still unsure if there's any cure to them but heard some people say that a change of diet such as broccoli and chicken with only water for 1-2 months has mitigated the amount of floaters substantially.

@K Bromelain capsules make them go away over time. I used to have a lot of floaters and they were really bothering me. After i took the capsules, they started to slowly disappear after 1-2 months. In the end i only noticed them 1-2 times a day. I can really recommend trying them out if you have a lot of floaters.

@Erron Black they don’t go away? That’s crazy. When mine “went away” (can’t think of better way to describe it lol) it seemed like my vision improved. Or at least got back to normal. Makes me wonder if my vision actually does improve or if that’s just my brain lying to me. I’m assuming that it’s the latter since the floaters don’t actually go away. It’s kind of disturbing to think you can’t even trust your own brain. If you can’t trust your own brain then who can you trust, eh? Lol!

@Erron Black I've had them for years, I'm 64 now. They have never gone away as near as I can recall, but there are times when I don't notice them as much. But when I have to work on a computer, or am looking at the blue sky, then they are very noticeable; shapes like clouds, dark lines and dark spots, flashing lights at the edge of my vision (noticeable mostly at night, or in dark rooms). They seriously affect my ability to see words clearly, like I have a film over my eyes. My brain has never learned to ignore these floaters, and they bother me a lot.

Reason I ask is because I used to get them as a kid and I used to get terrible headaches as a kid. But when puberty hit, the floaters became much more uncommon and the headaches stopped entirely. I'm 27 and had them my entire life. As a kid, I tried to explain my parents that I see some strange, transparent symbols looking at me. :D They are quite intense in my case, that's why I always wear polarized sunglasses during the day and generally prefer to live at night.

Glad i came across this video, I've recently been seeing things that are not quite there, I've heard of floaters and assumed it might be that. There are times where I feel like I see shadows moving around in my peripherals. When i first experienced this I was weirded out because I was sitting in my car alone at night watching videos on my phone and I kept thinking I was seeing someone coming around the car and I couldn't tell if it was in front of me or or behind me because I though I saw it in my rear/side mirrors. I had eye floaters since I was a teen. Definitely go to the eye doctor annually to check the health of your eye/ cornea. You learn to live with them and they usually appear when you are looking at a solid bright color wall or outdoors when it’s super bright (ie looking at the sky).

I have them, best way to describe them is like raindrops on a window but only notice them on really bright backgrounds. I got scared when i was young kid because I also suffer from rare headaches where i lose part of my vision in one eye. Back then i thought the two were related and ended up having a CAT scan to make sure nothing was wrong. I remember asking my friends back when I was a kid, looking up at the sky "can you see those bubbles?"

Have always been familiar with my floaters. But that flashing was notably different from what I had a few weeks ago, that had me all panicked about possible detachment, and is probably why this was recommended to me lol. When I called my doctor and confirmed it had subsided after fifteen minutes he told me it was an ocular migraine. It was more like a buzzing flashing, in a consistent shape, and it was the first time I'd ever had it happen. Same use of the language "flashing" but two very different possibilites.

I've had these flying fluffs and knots, as well as flashes from strong sunlight since I was 17-18 years old.

At first I thought I was going crazy, but now I only notice them when there is strong light or sunshine.

Floaters started for me sometime after I turned 40 which is when I became extremely sick (now nearly 48). I am very sick with multiple infections such as Borrelia (Lyme) etc that the NHS refuse to treat (role on Nuremberg 2.0). I definitely notice that the floaters either get much worse or return when I am tackling the multiple infections I am afflicted with, so like other symptoms I see (no pun intended, ha) floaters as a result of toxicity from dying infections, whether that be myco or endotoxins.

On a separate note, the NHS have now completely abandoned me. I have not seen a primary or secondary care Doctor for YEARS! Ignorance is no defence.

Very informative, but is there anything that can be done about floaters? I have open angle glaucoma in both eyes and central serous retinopathy in my left eye which causes a disturbance in depth perception and colour to the affected area. I’ve always had floaters but I’m noticing an increase in number and size. Mine look like the darker “cobweb” type.

Ha I have always like to play with my floaters, flick them about so I can clearly focus on one and try to keep it centred - but no off it goes, come back, there it... not it's gone again, here's a new one. I had seen floating patterns since I was a child. A consultant neurologist diagnosed my 'floaters' a year or two ago as optical migraine. Having looked into it, I'm fairly confident he is right and it is something I have had all my life. A quick thought for you. These are medical matters which have a long term effect on your health and well being. It's a good idea not to do a self-diagnosis on the basis of one YouTube video. A lot of what is on social media is incorrect, over-simplified or just plain rubbish and if your floaters are a result of ageing, how come you have been seeing them for decades - have you been elderly for decades?

@c2757 I noticed mine as a child, some kids said they could see them and most kids didn't have a clue what we were on about. I don't suffer regular head aches and these truly are within the eye, they react to the movement of the eye. My floaters haven't changed a bit since childhood and my vision is good but not what it was.

It really is important to get checked if there's a lot. I very recently went to the doctor because I had a lot of clear round eye floaters. It turned out I may have a rare syndrome called IRVAN syndrome. If it is IRVAN syndrome, I'm hoping it was caught early enough!🤞

I got cat scratch fever at 14. I could only see out a small spot in my left eye and had floaters. I had fluid built up behind my left eye (that’s what made my vision so bad) my mom took me to the er and they sent me to an eye specialist. These things are scary when they first come on. I had one come on in my early 60s. I had never heard of floaters at the time. I was in Target and thought a gnat was buzzing my head and face! I kept swatting at it , but it wouldn’t go away. At night in the dark, I would see flashes of light out the side of my eye. That’s when I knew it was an eye thing.

Doctors need to stress to their patients that floaters are very common and typically benign like this video does. The anxiety alone can really get yo you, making you think your eyesight is going.

Wow, so many people here have similar experience. I have these floaters for as long as I can remember, and I tried explaining to my parents and grandparents about it, but they never took me seriously, so I just proceed to not worry about them, I even made a routine out of it, when I just chilling after finishing my homework, I love to sit at my porch with some tea and snacks, and then I'd stare at the afternoon sky directing my eyes up down right left so that the floaters would just bouncing around in my vision, it was quite fun.

I noticed my first floaters in my mid-thirties afer a couple of stressful and dehydrated days.
New ones appeared twice since then and they always dissolved/ disappeared (I did not just get used to them) after around one month. Helpful things I tried that I found in forums:
Bromelain (pineapple enzymes), fish oil and MSM. I take all of them daily for about 3 weeks and after 4 to 5 weeks they are gone.

I first noticed floaters about 8 or 9 years old while on holiday. I was using binoculars to read the signs i could see from the window of my caravan and noticed what i called see through worms wriggling around. I noticed them when looking at clouds aswell. As i got older i got some darker floaters but i mostly forget about them. Sometimes one seems to catch my attention and be right in my field of vision but i learned to wiggle my eyes side to side really fast to shift it to a less noticeable spot.

If you have a floaters, be optimistic.
I have had floaters for about 30 years. Initially, when I first started noticing them, they consumed my life and made me very depressed. I went to a number of ophthalmologists and they told me just to ignore them and that eventually they would be inconsequential. I didn't believe them.
However, it took about 10 years and now I don't even think about them.

This is just what I needed to read. I'm about 2 years into the depression bout and trying to ignore them. The snow is awful, the sky is awful, and everything on my pc is now in dark mode. But amazingly, when I play VR games, I almost never notice them. That's where my hope started coming from. It's the constant changing pictures and excitement that allows me to enjoy, without noticing the floaters. Last job I had: Standing in place, most of the day, in a kitchen with white walls. I will be avoiding this in the future.

I've had them since I was a kid. I remember after experimenting with LSD and for a few years afterwards I'd see trails from all lights and saw hundreds of little blue lights shooting around in the blue sky. They were always there then they slowly went away. I still see trails off of most lights though. I've always had closed eyes hallucinations. When I was a little kid and I closed my eyes, I'd always see these two big black almond eyes. It was terrifying until I just accepted it wasn't going away. Once I did I started see seeing even more random images. Of people I didn't know or did know that were just going about there day. Occasionally I'd see things threw there eyes. Almost as if I were experiencing a moment of there lives. Every now and then a person I see looks directly at me as if they are surprised before slowly fading away. At night. While sleeping. I would often wake up unable to move, scream or anything and I'd have this weird buzzing sound in my head. And my right inner ear would vibrate. Once I was able to move again I had an very hard time staying awake. I talked to a doctor about it and they said it was sleep paralysis. In audible which part of your brain wakes up but the other part is still sleeping. It's horrifying when it happens but it hasn't happened since I was younger.

I went to the eye doctor after I woke up with them and noticed they never went away. She diagnosed me with posterior vitreous detachment and said the floaters would go away after a few weeks (by go away she said I’d learn to ignore them). That was over a year ago and they’re still here. The worst part is that the only cause for this seems to be old age but I’m still a minor

I can feel your situation. I am 20 now, having these shadows (1 or 2 dots) for about two years now. I've never been to a doctor since. Did you noticed anything that might help address the issue apart from surgery?
All this time I was searching for measures or behaviours to reduce the appearance of these shadows. It's not like they are disturbing me, I am just bothered if my eyes will stay healthy.

So I wanted to tell you what helped for me.
I noticed the floaters about 5 years ago and i lived with it. I read a lot of info and watched lots of videos.
I had a bit of encouragement when I tried the pineapple suggestions and I believe I saw a minor improvement.
Now without focusing on the floater I began taking a multivitamin, an iron supplement and B complex.
I would say its been about a year and a half and i realize that the floater is about 10% what it was.
I was actually looking for it one day and couldn't make it come back .
Obviously I could provide a lot more detail but as an overview that's all I did so ignore or draw your own conclusions.

My retina tore in October 2021. I saw a lot of those little black dots. Thankfully after some laser treatment all is well. I see some floaters but even they seem to fade as your mind does kinda “forget”/“ignore”them. And sometimes I see a little dot or three but thankfully no curtain.

What wasn't mentioned in this explanation is that most floaters, which we observe in our early years often starting in childhood, are the result of a remnant blood vessel left over from early development of our eyes. While the lens and its capsule are in early development, an artery links them from the posterior pole of eyeball, and provides nutrition to the lens. As the eye matures, this vessel disconnects from the back of the lens, and is absorbed. But, often, the vessel might detach from the back of the eye, first, so the ability for absorption is lost. Then, the vessel detaches from the back of the lens, and becomes "lost in space"... shrinks and turns into a floater.

@Rojiele Hepburn Not quite the same thing, Rojiele. What we see, as floaters, are shadows of vessel remnants, floating inside the vitreous. The vitreous is kinda like 90 weight gear oil that fills the inner void of the eyeball, and helps it maintain its globular shape. The vessels that we observe on the outside of the eye are unrelated to floaters.

This is INSANE! I'm 28 now , and clearly remember at 14 yrs old when I first told my mom that I'm " Seeing Black Spots floating around " and being terrified that I was going to lose my vision.... And my mom's response was " you need more fresh air "

This was extremely helpful. I’ve had floaters for as long as I can remember! I’m 13 now and they haven’t gone away. At least they help me entertain myself while I’m in 3rd period! Algebra sucks! I have this in one that looks like the cobweb version. I swear it happened after a sharpie was accidentally throw at my eye around 12 years old. I had vision loss for like 30-60sec after it hit my eye. The floaters are more noticeable for me when I’m stressed. I only see it commonly if I focus on them otherwise I don’t notice it most times.

I had a retina tear a year ago and saw hundreds of black spots (blood cells) and a big blob. They had to do laser surgery so the tear was sealed and after a few months all the little dots went away but the big blob is still there and appears to be tethered. If i look left and right real quick i can see it swing.

I’ve had floaters all my life (66 years old). Tens years ago I had my lenses replaced because of cataracts and due to that I had a detached retina in my right eye. Retina surgery removes the old eye fluid and is replaced with nitrogen. The body replaces the nitrogen with new fluid over time, with me about months and lo and behold, no floaters. I still have them in my left eye. The only way to remove the floaters is by replacing the fluid but the risks can be a detached retina. Not a good thing to go through. What people don’t realize is that an increase in floaters can be from a torn retina. All this crap is Gods at of showing us how much he/she/ it loves us!

@Aleias Guillen went to Wills Eye hospital emergency room and they scheduled surgery the next day. Right eye detached in June. Was a severe detachment. I didn’t act fast enough when I saw the pepper floaters and the shade coming down. Waited close to 2 weeks. Doctor put the buckle on the eye and i have full vision back. Just as I was feeling normal from the right eye recovery , the left eye suddenly had a big floater that I described as a Winshield wiper. It didn’t float but it moved side to side like a wiper. Two days later I saw small pepper. Went to Wills Eye the next day and they said it was a small tear so they used the laser and welded it closed. 3 days later I saw a shade. Went back to hospital and they did the buckle that night. I still have a slight loss of vision at the top of my eye. They said it’s scar tissue that I will always see. Other than that good vision. The only downside to getting the buckle is my cataracts have increased extremely fast and I will need surgery for them in the next 6 months. They weren’t bad at all before surgery but they told me they would increase faster. Also my eyeglass prescription has doubled which they also said would happen. I was a -6.00 I’m now -13.00. I’m very fortunate to still have my vision. Also I’m 55 years old with no head trauma and no diabetes issues or blood pressure issues. Doctor said it’s just bad luck.

Developed a floater in my right eye a few years ago. Was like looking through lint. Found a Dr in Florida that breaks them up using lasers. Had other Eye Drs tell me it can’t be done and it was BS. Well I’m here to tell you it worked and the floater is now inconspicuous.

Had something, but they do move according to the eye movements, I look left, the object moves partially to the same direction, like being affected by a flow. Such objects slide down the eyeball surface, and are affected very little by eyelids.

Just started seeing these at 21 years old. Scared I was going blind or having retinal detachment. Really hope that doesn’t happen, went to a eye doctor and found out my eyes were healthy and okay. Aside from minor astigmatism, and was told that glasses were optimal for right now. Eyes do get dry a lot, primarily from looking at screens.

I found that wearing sunglasses outside helps me not see them as much. Just hope they don’t get to worse with age. Hope that like the video says, the brain learns to ignore them with time.

Interesting. I have been having little flashes of light in my peripheral during night when I drive. Is annoying but this explanation was helpful. I have had floaters before as well. 64 yo male. Thanks for posting this.

So you should see a retina specialist, as indicated in this video this could cause problems with tears in the retina, and a complete detachment is absolutely something that needs to be treated immediately, as tears overtime can cause permanent damage to your vision, so my advice is see a retina specialist today, immediately schedule a visit to see your eye doctor, and tell them what you’re experiencing, and anyone over the age of 50, should be getting an annual eye exam by an ophthalmologist at least once a year! I had a young medical student at a teaching college catch my issue, and alerted his professor who told me that I needed to see a specialist, and I did, and the specialist told me that I had tiny tears in my retina, and that he needed to do surgery, and I was so shocked, because I’ve never heard anything like this happening to anyone, in fact I was so shocked, I put it off for a whole year, but luckily circumstances being what they were, got me the treatment I needed, and I went into surgery to repair my retina, looking back it probably saved my sight in that eye! See an ophthalmologist. Have yours eye pressures checked and a retinal exam. Sparkles can also be caused by a high IOP (internal optical pressure) which is glaucoma. Glaucoma can slowly wreck your eyesight permanently.

I had flashes of light as well.I went to my optician she said i needed emergency surgery straight a away.I actually had the laser surgery 2 days later. You need to go to an optician NOW.

The images of what it looks like when you have floaters is helpful and I realise this is indeed what I have had as long as I can remember. They come and go, haven't seen them for some time now

I’ve had floaters since high school. I’d say I have a dozen of the longer vein like floaters in each eye. I can usually ignore them but then out of the blue I can’t help but see all of them and get very distracted.
