1) Harem Scarem is a Rock band hailing from Ontario, Canada, formed in 1987. They renamed themselves Rubber in 1999 and released two albums under that name. In 2001, they went back to the Harem Scarem name. In the Summer of 2007 they announced they "will officially break-up after one more studio album." They would reform in 2013 and has released four more albums since then.
2) Harem Scarem emerged from Melbourne's mid-80's indie scene, but, it could be argued, were closer in sound to classic Australian blues-rock from a decade before (Dingoes, Coloured Balls, Chain, Rose Tattoo etc.). Their sound was infused with a heady mix of punk spirit and Stax soul that also made them contemporaries of the likes of The Gun Club and the Beasts Of Bourbon.
Harem Scarem first appeared on the Melbourne Psychobilly compilation “Asleep at the Wheel”. They soon developed (via the “Dogman” EP and some key line-up changes) into a powerhouse live act, where Christopher Marshall's extraordinary, passionate vocals combined with Charlie Marshall's stonesy guitar.
With the classic line-up of the Marshall brothers, Barry Palmer (guitar), Glen Sheldon (bass), Peter Jones (drums) and Chris Wilson (harmonica & sax), the band went into the studio with producer John Archer (Hunters & Collectors) and emerged with this, their masterful 1986 album: Pilgrim's Progress (now re-issued by Aztec Music http://www.aztecmusic.net/)
3) Harem Scarem is a Scottish contemporary folk band http://www.haremscaremscotland.co.uk who have collaborated with Will Oldham AKA 'Bonnie Prince Billy'
Voice Inside
Harem Scarem Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
On the horizon
Under dark cover of the night
Is when the voice inside
Overloads
Well it feeds on your
Inner vices
Show you the light
And the voice inside
Haunts your mind
No running away
No hope yet you pray
To end your sorrow
You're lying there safe
Then voices awake
You're destined to overload
With your heart and mind
Still colliding
There's a torture
You keep inside
The lyrics of Harem Scarem's "Voice Inside" are about the voice inside a person's head which can turn into a brutal taskmaster in some situations. The song begins with cryptic metaphors that depict the full moon on the horizon and the dark cover of the night, which symbolize the mental landscape of the singer. The voice inside the singer's head is represented by a force that overloads when the moon is up and the darkness is complete. When the voice inside is activated, it feeds on the singer's inner vices, making them feel trapped, confused, and hopeless.
The second verse deals with the singer's state of mind when divine intervention seems beyond reach. The voice inside keeps haunting the singer's mind, leaving them with no running away and no hope, except for praying to end their sorrow. The singer lies there safe, but the voices awaken, and they feel destined to overload. The final verse reflects on the state of mind where the heart and mind are still colliding, and there's a torture kept inside. The song portrays the singer struggling to deal with their internal problems, which may be related to guilt, anxiety, or depression.
