He is recognized as one of the composers/producers who best captured the zeitgeist of 1980s synth-pop in film scores. Best known for the "Axel F" electronic theme for "Beverly Hills Cop" and the "Top Gun Anthem" from the soundtrack for "Top Gun" - both often imitated, highly influential instrumental hits that to some extent practically redefined action film scoring in the 80s.
As a session musician, arranger and producer, Faltermeyer has worked with several international pop stars including Donna Summer, Pet Shop Boys, Blondie, Amanda Lear, Patti LaBelle, Barbra Streisand, Glenn Frey, Laura Branigan, Billy Idol, Jennifer Rush, Alexis, Cheap Trick, Sparks, Bob Seger, Chris Thompson, and Bonnie Tyler .
He has won two Grammy Awards: the first in 1986 for Best Album of original score written for a motion picture or television special, as a co-writer of the "Beverly Hills Cop" soundtrack; and the second in 1987 for Best Pop Instrumental Performance with guitarist Steve Stevens for "Top Gun Anthem" from the soundtrack.
The highly recognizable "Axel F" theme was recorded using three instruments: a Roland Jupiter-8, a Roland JX-3P and a Yamaha DX7 and also a LinnDrum drum machine. It has been covered by numerous artists and in May 2005 a re-recording of the classic reached number one in the UK singles chart after being remixed with the Crazy Frog ringtone.
"After Tango & Cash I made a decision to go back and raise my children in Germany, where I was born", Faltermeyer said in a 2006 interview for the "Tango & Cash" soundtrack CD. From his Red Deer Studios Estate in Munich, Germany, he has continued producing hit records and soundtracks mainly for the German market.
In 2002, he went to Vienna and wrote a musical with Rainhard Fendrich, Wake Up, which played for nearly two years in Vienna's famous Raimund Theater. The following soundtrack CD employed Copy Control technology and features an orchestral ouverture as well as 16 songs.
"But now I think it's time to come back where I started from." Faltermeyer has become re-associated with his Los Angeles agency, Creative Artists Agency, and is looking forward to getting involved again in Hollywood filmscoring. Earlier in 2006, Faltermeyer crafted the in-game soundtrack music for the computer game, Two Worlds.
He's living now in Baldham nearby Munich.

I cried so many times because of Goos and Ice, it was intense. I watched the movie 3-4 times and then calmed down a bit, very poignant. I've come to a conclusion. Now that I'm 60 years old, I'm thinking about death. I'm now the 2nd time I've died and I've thought about it.
This piece of music is played in an endless loop at my funeral, so to speak, to welcome the mourners, for my family, friends and acquaintances, that's my last wish.
The farewell should then also be from TOP GUN, namely the opening music is over
Both movies. That's how I am, that's how I was and that's how I always will be!
Sorry für die Übersetzung, Googel ist Schuld 😆😆

When this track was played for the first time in the Darkstar hypersonic sequence, I literally lost my mind. I mean, that scene has everything that makes men cry. Freed, but also isolated mind. Tranquility across the skies. The dream of humanity to go beyond the limits. And a bit of memory with an old friend.
@BleedingUranium
One of the most beautiful, breathtaking aviation scenes of all time.
@atmosk1110
I don't see enough credit given to this scene, which really is a second opener of sorts, and sets us up with the themes that will follow through the rest of the film. As he comes so close to touching the heavens, and quietly calls out 'talk to me Goose,' watching the sun breaking over the horizon, we see Maverick once again pushing the limits, and looking for his friend [seeking redemption]. This audience member couldn't help but become a well of emotions.
@MultiBaseball1010
Can’t agree more. The whole Darkstar sequence alone made this movie worth seeing. Just stunning, this song included.

When he chased the sunrise... beautiful.
@jonbaxter2254
@Nicholas May I adore the scne, it's my favourite in the film. Just so... beautiful
@xx182734
It was so emotional when Maverick said "Talk to me goose"...
@juan2049
Damn that got me in the theater. The first time I watched this movie I thought he was for sure going to die. Hit me hard when he said that line.
@kjmok
and also when rooster said "talk to me dad" in the valley.
@Red-li2ys
It's beautiful poetry. Maverick was traveling so fast, and he's so high up, it was as if he was "approaching the Heavens". Him calling out to Goose wasn't just a figure a of speech. He's literally calling out to Goose in Heaven.
10 minutes in and it's emotional as hell.
