So great! I grew up listening to this with my dad. Had the pleasure of seeing Harry James in 1976 and it was awesome. Got to meet him and got some pictures and he signed some albums my father had bought, still have them. Corky Corcoran came and sat at the table with us during the break, and had short drink with my father. He told me his solo coming up was just for me since I liked the music so much.
I’ll never forget that night.
Yrs later we saw the Woody Herman band and it was fantastic too.

Great to hear a mix with Freddie Green so prominent. Usually one has to strain to hear him. The Basie/Green anchor for the rhythm section gave the band such a swinging, solid fundamental. And, of course the Basie tempo finds the “pocket” on practically every tune.

This is GREAT. Harry Carney's shortened Sophisticated Lady (in Ellington Hits Medley) begins @18:33 , ending with his 1 minute held circular breathing note at the end. Just Beautiful, Harry.

OMG such great surprises, that's Johnny Hodges on alto halfway through this thing! Nobody plays like that anymore, so crazy to hear. You can also hear Coleman Hawkins' influence in a lot of the sax players they way they phrase and attack their notes.

Notice Baritone Sax player Harry Carney begins to circular breathe at 19:25 and continues without stopping playing tones until 20:26. So, for around ONE MINUTE, the sax is continuing to play (with Ellington providing piano flourishes behind). You can tell because the sound does not stop, and because Carney's cheeks puff out a bit as he executes the breathing maneuver.

In circular breathing the player temporarily takes spare air into his cheeks, and uses that to power the wind instrument, while he/she takes a quick breath. Then back to normal outward blowing. Repeat as needed to continue.

Both great..Ellington is Mozart..complex, intellectual, deep..Basie is like Chopin ... minimalist..lively... less is more. Both swing but from different points of view. Sinatra made only ONE album with Duke,,so-so except for " Yellow Days"..pure Sinatra. Basie, on the other hand fit Sinatras style and could swing in Vegas

Three shows from the 1960's syndicated series, "The Big Bands", which was seen on several local TV stations around the country. The sound quality was excellent because the programs were not transmitted over low-fidelity channels on AT&T's long-distance network, the way the audio of most network TV programs was fed to the affiliates. Instead, video tapes (in all their glory) were shipped to the participating stations. Somewhere in my attic there may still be some of the high-fidelity audio recordings I made (no VCR's in those days) from a TV station in Baltimore, MD. I believe the video was in color; and, the aspect ratio was 4:3, unlike the stretched images in these kinescope recordings. Great shows, with some of the all-time greats. Thanks for posting.

Cool joint and good players, but not big band jazz. If such a place exists nowadays, I've not heard of it. I think big band is going to be found in concert venues only. Can you imagine the cost of a full band like this nowadays? It would be cost prohibitive.....@brunorob1

Oh boy, would that such a place existed today! A club featuring this quality of ensemble would have lines around the block. And at the front of that queue you’d find myself. But, alas, such is not to be.
Just to mention a modern German band that really swings, and is endorsed by none other than Sammy Nestico as possibly the best band (big band) playing in the world today. The name of the group is the Southwestern Radio Band. And they really cover some of the standards as well, and in some passages, possibly better. And they have a sensational singer in Fola Dada. Who has some of the best phrasing and easily best set of ears heard in a while.
And to mention the Patti Austin collaboration with the Melbourne Symphony jazz unit as being top-notch along with the trumpet James Morrison is to include some modern recordings that play well. Big band, that is.

It is interesting to note that until the advent of the disco in 1978 9Saturday Night Fever), musicians had not managed to find the best dance rythms. In hindsight it is difficult to believe but I have experienced it myself, both as dancer and as musician. After 1978, dance was at 120 or 122. Today is tends to be at 140. Everything goes faster, these days.

Yes this is weird. Eddie is there during Pleasingly Plump and there is no Marshall Royal. Marshall is back for All of Me and Sal Nistico appears! Eric Dixon, BobbyPlater and Charlie Fowlkes seem to be there throughout!!

First, it's Nistico, not Nestico, though Sal told me he and arranger-composer Sammy Nestico--note spelling--who wrote most famously for Basie, are cousins, they have discovered; their families are from the same small village in Sicily. A lot of names got changed, inadvertently, when immigrants checked in at Ellis Island. (That's why there are Schuelers and Scheulers and Newmans and Neumans, et al.). Second, Sal replaced Lockjaw for almost a year in 1964-1965; the Basie appearances here are from two different shows, recorded months apart, that originally appeared on WGN-TV's "The Big Bands" series, which I saw when they originally aired. That's why Lockjaw and Sal both appear. And note the one Basie segment has Rufus Jones (he replaced Sonny Payne on drums in 1965) and only four saxes in the Rufus segment: Lead alto Marshall Royal is missing, and Bobby Plater moved over to play lead. (I saw the Basie band at the Club Laurel on North Sheridan Road in Chicago in September 1964, and when Sal Nistico was soloing, who walks in the door in a full-length leather jacket and a girl on his arm but the guy he replaced--Lockjaw Davis!)

hans pols I would really like to share your hope(s). The plain fact is that it is becoming to expensive to operate a fully fledged big-band. Basically all classical orchestra's/opera's run at a loss and need (desperate) Federal/State or city subsidies or donations. And percentage wise their are more Classical admirers than for Jazz! These days the Vanguard band, Lincoln big band (both in NY) to name a few, are just hanging in! Plus they have not the inventive/driven/swinging arrangements. So i'm afraid that your and my wish will be lost in these indifferent and troubled times. Cheers!

WGN's studios on West Addison St. in Chicago, about a mile or so west of Wrigley Field. The WGN Radio stations were at Tribune Tower downtown on North Michigan Avenue but the TV facilities moved to the northwest side in the early 1960s, I believe. But these shows were recorded in 1964 and 1965.

The fact that they had to use the service entrance is made much of in your comment. Little has changed today, for your information.
The usual procedure for any band or entertainer even today, from the smallest venues to big halls is to use the loading dock and service “back door” access. And seldom, if anytime, use the main customer entrances for anything.
And that applies to both white and colored folks.

I hate it hen idiots take what was a normal 4:3 video aspect ratio and have to get creative to fill a wide screen view making everything short and fat because OMG the world will end if they don't have every inch of a PC screen accounted for.
